Ulsan HD FC is shaking things up after a season that can only be described as a major disappointment. The club announced Friday that they're parting ways with attackers Gustav Ludwigson and Um Won-sang. It's a clear signal that significant changes are afoot at the Munsu Football Stadium, and frankly, they're probably needed.
Ulsan HD SHOCKER! Star Attackers OUT - What Will H...
Let's be honest, after an unprecedented run of three consecutive K League 1 titles from 2022 to 2024, Ulsan's nosedive to ninth place last season was shocking. They barely avoided relegation, scraping by with just two points to spare. That's not the Ulsan we've come to expect. Something had to give.
Ludwigson, the Swedish winger, had been a fixture in Ulsan's squad for three seasons, contributing 18 goals and 11 assists in 85 appearances. He even managed five goals last year, making him the team's third-highest scorer. Um Won-sang burst onto the scene in 2022, leading the team with 12 goals. However, his form dipped considerably in the following years, partly due to nagging knee injuries. He only managed a single goal and five assists in 30 matches last season. While both players had their moments, it’s clear that the club feels a fresh injection of attacking talent is necessary. You can see a picture of Um Won-sang celebrating a goal from earlier in the year, and another of Ludwigson doing the same. Those moments were fewer and further between in 2025, unfortunately.
These departures follow the earlier announcement that veteran midfielder Jung Woo-young would also be leaving the club. The whole situation is complicated by the fact that Ulsan went through two head coaches last year. Shin Tae-yong, the second manager, left under a cloud of allegations involving physical and verbal abuse of players. Not exactly a recipe for success, is it?
But there's a glimmer of hope. On Christmas Eve, Ulsan announced the appointment of club legend Kim Hyun-seog as the new head coach. Bringing in a familiar face could be exactly what the team needs to steady the ship and rebuild their winning mentality. This offseason is proving to be a busy one for Ulsan HD FC. Let's see if these moves pay off and get them back to the top of the K League 1 table next season.
