Onuachu's Heroics! Nigeria Secures Top Spot - What a Game!
Sports 30 December 2025

Nigeria has wrapped up their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign in style, notching a decisive 3-1 victory against Uganda. The Super Eagles, already guaranteed a spot in the tournament, showed no signs of complacency as they dominated the match and secured the top spot in Group C. I have to say, watching them lately, they've really been playing with a newfound confidence.

Onuachu's Heroics! Nigeria Secures Top Spot - What...

The game, played at the Complexe Sportif de Fes, was a showcase of Nigerian talent. Trabzonspor's Paul Onuachu got the party started with a goal in the 28th minute, proving once again his knack for finding the back of the net. It was a well-deserved lead, and the Super Eagles seemed to build momentum from there. Ugandan referee Djindo Louis Houngnandande certainly had his work cut out for him trying to keep up with the pace of the game.

Then, enter Raphael Onyedika. He really put the game to bed with a quickfire double in the 62nd and 67th minutes. It's moments like those that truly define a team’s resolve and Nigeria certainly showed theirs. Uganda, to their credit, didn't completely collapse. Rogers Mato managed to pull one back in the 75th minute, but by then, the damage had already been done.

Adding insult to injury for Uganda, Jamal Salim received a red card in the 56th minute, making an already uphill battle even steeper. Down to ten men, they struggled to contain the relentless Nigerian attack. It's always tough to play a man down, especially against a team as skilled as Nigeria.

Interestingly, Galatasaray's Victor Osimhen played a significant 87 minutes, showcasing his importance to the squad. Onuachu, having made his mark, was subbed off in the 77th minute. It was a little surprising that Beşiktaş's Wilfred Ndidi remained on the bench throughout the match, but perhaps the coach wanted to give others a chance to shine. It's all part of squad management, of course.

So, there you have it. Nigeria finishes their qualifying campaign unbeaten, a testament to their strength and determination. Meanwhile, Uganda's AFCON dreams are unfortunately dashed this time around. But hey, there's always next time. For Nigeria, it's onward and upward as they prepare to compete for the coveted AFCON title. They're certainly looking like strong contenders, and I wouldn't bet against them.
