Alright, fellow "Stranger Things" fanatics, gather 'round! It looks like the Upside Down is expanding… right into your local movie theater. The theatrical finale event is getting bigger and bigger, and I have to say, it's pretty exciting to see.
'Stranger Things' Finale: Theaters ADDED! Will YOU...
Remember how they initially announced those screenings for the series finale in late October? It was supposed to be in over 350 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Well, buckle up, because that number has now exploded to over 500 locations! And if you're like me and procrastinated a bit, don't worry – a quick search this morning showed there are still seats available in Los Angeles, although many showings are listed as "almost full." So, hop to it!
What's particularly cool is that it's not just your usual AMC, Regal, and Cinemark suspects. We're talking Harkins, Megaplex, Cineplex, Alamo, and even Landmark theaters are getting in on the action. It really feels like everyone wants a piece of this "Stranger Things" pie.
Now, here's the slightly unusual part. As Deadline reported, due to some complicated talent residual stuff, the screenings aren't actually ticketed. That reservation fee you're paying (like the $20 at AMC) gets converted into a concession voucher. Smart move, if you ask me - everyone loves popcorn. So, instead of box office revenue, they're gauging success solely on admissions.
And speaking of admissions, the numbers are pretty impressive. According to EntTelligence, the "Stranger Things" finale is already sitting at over 1.1 million RSVPs! That's ahead of "KPop Demon Hunters" pre-sales (which were around 700,000) but behind "Demon Slayer…Infinity Castle" (which raked in a whopping 1.7 million). Not too shabby, considering the "Stranger Things" event is only running for just over a day. It all kicks off at 5 PM PT on December 31st, coinciding with the Netflix release, and wraps up on January 1st. Short and sweet, but intense!
Of course, all those people flocking to theaters won't actually count towards Netflix's viewership numbers, which is a little odd. I mean, you'd think they'd want to track that crossover! But honestly, I don't think Netflix is sweating it too much. Season 5 is practically guaranteed to land in their Top 10 most-watched series, and with a finale clocking in at two hours and five minutes, it'll still rack up the views.
The Duffer brothers themselves are even planning to hit up a screening in LA. As Russ Duffer put it, "What a way to close out a ten-year journey — together." And who knows, maybe you'll even spot them there! I know I'll be keeping an eye out. Happy viewing, everyone!
