Bolu Schools Extend Closure: Mother Nature's Winter Grip Tightens

School's Out... FOREVER?! City Extends Break, Pare...

Okay, folks, it looks like winter's not letting go of Bolu, Turkey, anytime soon. Schools will be closed for yet another day, Tuesday, December 30th, thanks to continued heavy snowfall and icy conditions. This isn't just a "sprinkling of snow" kind of situation; we're talking about the kind of weather that makes even seasoned winter veterans reconsider their travel plans. I remember a similar situation a few years back when I was covering a story in upstate New York – getting around was a nightmare!

The Bolu Governorship made the call, announcing the extended suspension of classes for all public and private educational institutions. That includes everything from rehabilitation centers and driving schools to even Quran courses. It's a comprehensive shutdown aimed at prioritizing safety. I'm sure parents are breathing a sigh of relief, even if the kids are probably celebrating with snowballs.

And it's not just students who are getting a break. The Governorship also announced administrative leave for pregnant and disabled public employees, as well as female employees with young children in nurseries, kindergartens, or special education institutions. It’s a smart move, really. Why risk it when you can keep people safe and sound at home? There’s also a provision for 24-hour service units like health and security; unit supervisors will assess the working arrangements for their personnel, which makes complete sense given the circumstances.

This closure follows a previous one on Monday, December 29th, meaning Bolu's children have already had a day off due to the relentless snowfall, which, by the way, has apparently been going on for four days straight. Four days! That's enough to build a serious snowman army. Makes you wonder if they'll need to start thinking about snow days cutting into summer vacation at this point.

The impact extends beyond just School closures, unfortunately. According to reports, 245 village roads in Bolu are currently blocked by snow and ice. Think about the implications of that for residents needing access to supplies, medical care, and just general connectivity. The breakdown includes 86 villages connected to the city center, and then chunks in Dörtdivan, Gerede, Mengen, Mudurnu, and Yeniçağa. Thankfully, Provincial Special Administration teams are out there working hard, trying to clear and salt the roads to get things moving again. Let's hope they can make some progress soon and bring some relief to those isolated communities. Winter's beautiful, sure, but it can also be brutal.
