Ukraine Talks: Breakthrough...Or a Dangerous Impasse?!
Current Affairs 29 December 2025

Mar-a-Lago, FL – Optimism and lingering hurdles marked the discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate this weekend. While both leaders used terms like "great" and "terrific" to describe the talks, the persistent issue of Ukraine's contested territory, particularly the Donbas region, continues to cast a shadow on any potential peace agreement.

Ukraine Talks: Breakthrough...Or a Dangerous Impas...

The meeting, aimed at advancing a revised peace plan, saw progress in certain areas, but a definitive breakthrough remains elusive. Zelensky revealed on Monday that the U.S. had proposed security guarantees for a 15-year period, a step in what he hopes is the right direction. Trump himself stated that an agreement on this specific aspect was "close to 95%" complete, which, let's be honest, is a cautiously optimistic assessment.

However, the elephant in the room is still Donbas. Russia's unwavering desire to fully control the region poses a significant obstacle. Trump admitted that a deal on Donbas remains "unresolved," though he offered a glimmer of hope by saying it was "getting a lot closer." This sentiment, however, clashes with the Kremlin's continued demand for a complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the areas of Donbas still under Kyiv's control.

Ukraine's position, as reiterated by Zelensky, involves potentially establishing a free economic zone in the region, policed by Ukrainian forces. But he stressed that any discussions on this critical point must involve the Ukrainian people themselves. It's a sensible demand, ensuring that any agreement reflects the will of those most affected.

Now, Trump's stance on Ukraine's contested territories has been… well, let's just say "fluid." We've seen him suggest Ukraine might reclaim them, only to seemingly backtrack later. This inconsistency adds a layer of uncertainty to the negotiations. As recently as September, he surprised many by hinting at a possible reclamation, only to change course, which raises questions about just how firm the U.S. position truly is.

Zelensky, ever the optimist, maintains that an overall peace agreement is "90%" within reach – a figure he's been consistent with leading up to the Florida talks. He also highlighted progress on security guarantees, clarifying that the U.S. offer of a 15-year guarantee is extendable, although Kyiv ideally wants the option to extend it for up to 50 years. He hopes these guarantees would take effect immediately upon the signing of any peace deal. Whether the U.S. is willing to commit to such a long-term arrangement remains to be seen.

Trump even floated the idea of trilateral talks involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine, suggesting they could occur "at the right time." That's a potentially huge development, though timing, as always, will be everything.

Trump is clearly keen to add the resolution of the Ukraine-Russia war to his list of accomplishments. However, he also acknowledged that stalled or failed talks could unfortunately lead to a continuation of the conflict. The stakes are undeniably high.

Adding another potential layer to the diplomatic dance, Zelensky suggested that Ukrainian officials could meet at the White House in January, potentially alongside European leaders. This indicates a continued commitment to finding a solution, but the "thorny issues" Trump mentioned are far from resolved, and the path to peace remains fraught with challenges. We'll be watching closely to see if these talks can truly bridge the remaining gaps.
