Well, this is interesting. It seems like Inin Games, known for physical releases of indie and retro-inspired games, might have jumped the gun on some juicy Nintendo Switch 2 info. They initially hinted, pretty strongly I might add, that Nintendo is offering smaller, cheaper cartridge options for the upcoming console. The operative phrase here being "cheaper," of course.
Switch 2 SHOCK! Nintendo Ditching Game Cards?! Che...
Their social media update was pretty direct. They specifically mentioned Nintendo announcing "two new smaller cartridge [storage capacity] sizes," which they said was allowing them to "recalculate production." This strongly suggests that releasing games physically on the Switch 2 just got a whole lot more financially feasible for them. And frankly, that's a big deal for smaller developers who rely on physical releases to reach a certain segment of the market.
But here's where things get murky. Almost as quickly as the initial announcement landed, Inin Games seemed to realize they’d perhaps let the cat out of the bag a bit too early. They scrubbed the reference to the "new smaller cartridge sizes" from their official blog. Talk about damage control!
The backtracking didn't stop there. They then issued another statement clarifying that "there has been no official announcement or confirmation from Nintendo concerning cartridge storage capacities.” So, basically, they were saying, "Oops, never mind everyone, nothing to see here!" Makes you wonder what kind of call they received from Nintendo HQ, doesn't it?
Despite the quick walk-back, the initial information does line up with previous rumors. There's been talk for a while now about Nintendo potentially offering 16GB and 32GB cartridge options alongside the expected 64GB. This would make a lot of sense, actually. Not every game needs a massive storage capacity, and offering smaller, cheaper cartridges would allow developers to save money and potentially offer their games at a lower price point. A win-win for everyone, theoretically.
The whole situation raises a few questions, though. Was Inin Games genuinely misinformed, or did they know something they weren't supposed to share yet? Nintendo is notoriously tight-lipped about upcoming hardware. And if these smaller cartridges are indeed a reality, it could significantly impact the landscape of physical game releases on the Switch 2. We’ll just have to wait and see what Nintendo officially announces… whenever that may be.
