Current Affairs 12 December 2025

Korea and the United States held a meeting of their key nuclear deterrence body in Washington earlier this week, the defense ministry said Friday, marking the first such talks under U.S. President Donald Trump's second term. The fifth meeting of the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) took place in Washington on Thursday, according to the ministry. The session was led by Kim Hong-cheol, the deputy minister for national defense policy, and Robert Soofer, acting deputy assistance secretary of defense in charge of nuclear deterrence, chemical and biological policy. During the meeting, Kim stressed that Korea will conduct the "leading role" in conventional defense capabilities. The meeting marked the first NCG gathering since both the Trump administration and the government of Korean President Lee Jae-myung took office in January and in June, respectively.
