‘Identity is never fixed. It's layered, constantly shifting': That's how Iranian-American artist Soraya Sharghi views the world, and it's an ethos that permeates her captivating artwork.
Iranian Artist's SHOCKING Identity Revelation! You...
Sharghi, in her own words, finds a unique form of resistance through creation, bringing "beauty, strength, and imagination into spaces where control or limitation once existed." Her pieces aim to break down barriers and cultivate understanding through visual storytelling, a mission statement clearly visible in works like ‘Rising with the Song of Nymphs’ (2021). This piece, like much of her collection, unfolds a vibrant universe where mythology, memory, and the very texture of the materials themselves all converge.
Speaking recently with Global Voices, Sharghi delved into her artistic journey, exploring themes of imagination, hybridity, myth-making, and the complex politics surrounding the female body. Her hybrid figures, bursting forth with vibrant colors and unexpected forms, explore the feminine not as some passive muse, but as a powerful, almost primordial, generative force.
It's a fascinating perspective, and one that is brilliantly translated into her art. Works like "Rising with the Song of Nymphs" and her hand-sculpted ceramic guardians beautifully blur the lines between painting and sculpture, reimagining myth not just as old stories, but as a living language of survival and, ultimately, rebirth.
Born in Tehran in 1988 and now based in the heart of New York City, Sharghi honed her artistic skills at the San Francisco Art Institute, fearlessly experimenting with painting, sculpture, and installation. Interestingly, her childhood habit of creating elaborate, imaginative stories for her younger sister laid the foundation for the incredibly rich visual universe she creates today. "Imagination comes naturally in childhood," she explains, "and I’ve made sure never to lose that. It still drives the way I work today."
Sharghi sees her art as a form of reclamation and, perhaps even more importantly, protection. "Growing up in Iran, imagination became my refuge. Surrealism was not just an artistic influence; it was a way of surviving reality." In her distinct visual language, myth transforms into autobiography. Each hybrid heroine becomes a self-made guardian of resilience, forever shaped by restriction, migration, and the ongoing negotiation of what it means to be a woman in the world.
Discussing her diverse use of materials, Sharghi observes, "Each material carries its own energy and teaches me something new… together they form a map of my spiritual evolution." This exploration of material and meaning, combined with her powerful storytelling, makes Soraya Sharghi an artist to watch, a voice that resonates with a unique blend of beauty, strength, and unwavering imagination.
In closing, Sharghi reflects on the captivating alchemy of clay, fire, and color that continue to shape her ever-expanding and deeply personal artistic universe. It’s a universe that invites us all to explore the shifting landscapes of identity and the boundless power of the imagination.
