Get ready for a dose of Saudi Arabian charm! The Red Sea Film Festival is about to get a whole lot more interesting with the world premiere of *A Matter Of Life And Death*, a romantic comedy promising a fresh take on love and life in Jeddah. And we’ve got your exclusive first glimpse with a brand-new teaser. Honestly, even just the premise has me intrigued.
Saudi Rom-Com: Will Love Survive?! Fans on Edge!
The film stars Yaqoub Alfarhan, known for his roles in *Scales* and *Norah*, and Sarah Taibah, who made waves with *Mandoob*. They play an unlikely pair thrown together by… well, life. Taibah is Hayat, a young woman convinced she’s jinxed, constantly battling superstition. Alfarhan is Youssef, a doctor who has to keep his emotions in check because of a tricky heart condition. Talk about opposites attract – or maybe collide is a better word.
Now, this isn't just any rom-com; it's the second feature from Yemeni director Anas Ba-Tahaf, based in Jeddah. He caught everyone's attention with his debut, *Fay's Palette*, back in 2021, which was, shall we say, visually unique. Taibah and Ba-Tahaf have worked together before; she was in *Fay's Palette* and co-wrote and starred in *Jameel Jeddan*, a TV series about a woman who wakes up from a five-year coma. So, they clearly have a working relationship and are comfortable working with more quirky material.
I remember hearing about *A Matter Of Life & Death* at last year’s Red Sea Film Festival, so it’s great to see it finally hitting the screen. It's a co-production between several big players in the Middle Eastern film scene: Film Clinic (Cairo), Front Row Productions (Dubai), Arabia Pictures Group, and Rotana Studios (both Saudi Arabian). That kind of collaboration usually means a solid production value and a wider distribution reach, which is excellent news for getting Saudi cinema seen by a global audience.
Romantic comedies are a universal language, and I'm genuinely curious to see how *A Matter Of Life & Death* translates that language through a Saudi Arabian lens. A superstitious woman and a doctor with a fragile heart – it sounds like a recipe for both laughter and maybe a few heartfelt moments. The Red Sea Film Festival is always a great place to discover new voices and perspectives, and this film definitely fits that bill. Keep an eye out for our full review once it premieres!
