Mia Goth on 'Blade' Chaos: "It Just Unraveled!" What's Happening?!

It seems like Marvel's "Blade" reboot is still shrouded in mystery, even for those involved. Mia Goth, fresh off her role in "Frankenstein," has offered a pretty candid update on the perpetually delayed project, and it’s not exactly encouraging. Turns out, being cast doesn't guarantee you know what's going on behind the scenes. This production sounds like it's been through the wringer.

In a recent chat with Josh Horowitz on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Goth revealed she’s largely in the dark about the movie's current status. After being cast, she participated in some initial production activities, but, as she put it, the whole thing "unraveled from there." Ouch.

"I don’t know what’s going on with that," she admitted. "I think that they want to make it, and it’s such an important film for them that they’re taking their time with it. I really don’t have any information. I don’t know why it’s taken the time that it has, but we will see.” Her tone suggests a mix of hope and, frankly, a bit of resignation. You can almost hear the "who knows?" at the end of that statement.

Goth elaborated on her initial involvement, saying, "The furthest that it got with me … they flew [me] to Atlanta, and we did a chemistry test between [star] Mahershala [Ali] and I, and we did a costume fitting and a wig fitting, and I was very excited in the direction it was going. It was very cool. And Mahershala had such an interesting take on it, and he was great. And then it just unraveled from there, unfortunately.” Imagine getting that far and then… nothing. It's got to be frustrating.

For those keeping track, Goth joined the project back in 2023. There were whispers that this new "Blade" would be a period piece. In fact, costume bits designed by Ruth Carter for the abandoned project reportedly found a second life in Ryan Coogler’s upcoming vampire horror film, "Sinners," set in the 1930s. Goth was even rumored to be playing Lilith, a major baddie from the "Blade" comics. That would have been awesome. I always thought Goth would be perfect for an MCU villain.

Despite all the setbacks, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige insists the project is still alive. Ali is still attached to star as the Daywalker, a role made famous by Wesley Snipes back in the day (remember those movies?). Apparently, there were *four* versions of the film in development at one point, including a couple of period pieces. But Feige claims they’ve "landed on modern day and that’s what we’re focusing on." We'll see.

Understandably, Marvel pulled "Blade" from its 2025 release calendar late last year. Originally announced in 2019, it's been a constant victim of delays – the pandemic, the strikes, and a revolving door of directors, including Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange. Feige’s explanation for the pause after the director departures was that they "didn’t want to put a leather outfit on [Ali] and have him start killing vampires" without a solid script. Fair enough, I guess. Eric Pearson is reportedly the latest writer to take a stab at the script. Let’s hope he can finally nail it and get this thing moving.
