Messi's 2026 World Cup Shock: Will He Or Won't He?! Argentina Stunned!
Sports 07 December 2025

Is Lionel Messi set to light up the 2026 FIFA World Cup? It’s the question on every football fan's lips as we edge closer to next summer's tournament, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The thought of seeing the little magician grace the pitch one more time is enough to send shivers down your spine.

Messi's 2026 World Cup Shock: Will He Or Won't He?...

The Argentine legend, already a titan in World Cup lore, will be 39 by the time the tournament rolls around. He’s already competed in an incredible five World Cups, holding the record for the most appearances – a staggering 26 – which he snagged in 2022, surpassing the legendary Lothar Matthäus of Germany. Pretty impressive, wouldn't you agree?

After Argentina's euphoric victory in the 2022 World Cup, many of us (myself included!) thought Messi would hang up his international cleats. It felt like the perfect ending to a fairytale. However, the spark of possibility for a 2026 appearance refuses to be extinguished.

In a recent interview with SPORT, Messi himself addressed the burning question. "It’s special to play with the national team, especially in major official competitions, and even more so considering what a World Cup means, especially after having won it," he said. Then came the crucial caveat: "But as I was saying, I don’t want to be a burden, so to speak. I want to feel physically fit, to be sure I can help and contribute to the team." This is classic Messi – humble, team-oriented, and brutally honest. He's not going to be riding the bench just for the sake of it.

Thankfully, "burden" is the last word that comes to mind when you watch Messi play. His recent dominance in Major League Soccer is a testament to his enduring talent. Leading the league in both goals (26) and assists (19) is no small feat, and he also spearheaded Inter Miami CF to their first-ever MLS Cup title, racking up two assists in the final. To think, this was after the team limped to third in the Eastern Conference. It's like he's operating on a different plane.

If Messi does step onto the pitch for Argentina in 2026, he'll make history as the first male player to participate in six World Cups. Across both genders, only Brazil's Formiga (7) and Marta (6) have accomplished such a feat. That's elite company, folks.

While FIFA hasn't yet announced the official deadline for World Cup roster submissions, it typically falls in the month leading up to the tournament. Mark your calendars: the 2026 World Cup kicks off on Wednesday, June 11th, culminating in what is sure to be a thrilling final on Sunday, July 19th. Will we see Messi there? Only time will tell, but the prospect alone is enough to send excitement through the footballing world.
