Zelensky's US Talks: Breakthrough or Breakdown?! What Happens Next?
Current Affairs 06 December 2025

Zelensky has signaled a potential breakthrough in peace negotiations with the United States, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the relentless Russian bombardment of Ukrainian territory. Following what he described as a "very constructive" phone call, the Ukrainian President reaffirmed his dedication to collaborating with the US to achieve a lasting end to the conflict. The call included Steve Witkoff, a peace envoy for Donald Trump, and Jared Kushner, the former president's son-in-law, adding an intriguing layer of complexity to the diplomatic landscape.

Discussions, according to Zelensky, honed in on the crucial element of ensuring Russia's adherence to any eventual peace agreement. This is obviously key. It's one thing to sign a piece of paper, and quite another to enforce it. Ukrainian officials have spent the last few days in Miami, hammering out the details of a US-led peace proposal, and their participation in the call further underscores the seriousness of the engagement.

Despite these promising diplomatic developments, the stark reality on the ground remains grim. Moscow has shown no visible signs of softening its stance, and the relentless barrage of missiles and drones continues to inflict devastation across Ukraine. "Ukraine is determined to keep working in good faith with the American side to genuinely achieve peace," Zelensky stated on X, formerly Twitter. He added that their discussions covered "key points that could ensure an end to the bloodshed and eliminate the threat of a new Russian full scale invasion." It's a powerful statement, but the proof, as they say, will be in the pudding.

Overnight, Russia launched yet another wave of air and missile strikes, drawing swift condemnation from Ukraine's European allies. French President Emmanuel Macron, echoing his support, expressed his "full solidarity" with Zelensky after speaking with him, promising France's commitment to de-escalation and a ceasefire. Macron also confirmed his attendance at crucial talks in London on Monday, where he'll join Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The central focus? Guaranteeing Ukraine's post-war security – a massive undertaking if and when a ceasefire finally comes.

These leaders have been mulling over the potential deployment of a European peacekeeping force in the event of a ceasefire, a move championed by Sir Keir who emphasized Ukraine's right to self-determination. He’s argued that a peacekeeping force would be "vital" for safeguarding Ukraine's security. Putin, however, has already rejected this idea outright, warning that any foreign troops in Ukraine would be considered "legitimate targets." This is a major sticking point that needs to be addressed. This threat complicates any potential agreement significantly. It's going to take a lot more than just wishful thinking to make this peace deal a reality.

The scale of the Russian attacks is staggering. According to Ukrainian authorities, Friday night saw a barrage of 653 drones and 51 missiles. A strike on a railway hub in Fastiv, near Kyiv, destroyed the main station and damaged vital rolling stock. The impact on Ukraine's energy infrastructure is also severe, with blackouts reported in eight regions. Russia, predictably, claims its targets were military-industrial sites, as well as energy and port infrastructure. As the talks in Florida enter their third day, the pressure is mounting on all sides to find a path toward a sustainable peace.
