Oscar Race SHOCKER! Underdogs Steal the Show - Can They Win?!
Movies & TV Series 06 December 2025

The race for the International Oscar is already heating up, and while it’s early days, a few strong contenders are starting to emerge from the pack. Remembering the seismic impact of *Parasite* just before the world went sideways in 2020, everyone's wondering if we'll see another film break through in such a significant way.

Oscar Race SHOCKER! Underdogs Steal the Show - Can...

Leading the charge, at least in my eyes, is Norway’s *Sentimental Value*. Joachim Trier is a filmmaker ripe for wider recognition, and this family drama, focusing on the complicated relationship between an arthouse director and his daughter, feels like it could have that *Parasite*-esque crossover appeal. Stellan Skarsgård, playing the flawed but brilliant father, is due for an Oscar nod, and Renate Reinsve, as his equally brilliant and troubled daughter, could very well steal the show. Adding Elle Fanning to the mix as an American starlet just sweetens the deal. And the screenplay, a collaboration between Trier and Eskil Vogt? Expect sharp, emotionally resonant writing that voters will appreciate.

Now, if the Cannes judges were trying to make a bold statement, two other European entries are definitely worth keeping an eye on. Germany’s *Sound of Falling* by Mascha Schilinski sounds like a genuinely unique piece of cinema – an almost hypnotic dive into the lives of four generations of women in a small, rural town. This one could resonate with those voters looking for something a little more experimental and avant-garde. Then there’s *Sirāt* from Spain, directed by Oliver Laxe. This one's a real dark horse, but word-of-mouth is strong. It's a dystopian thriller about a man infiltrating an underground rave scene, and it's a risk for Spain, no doubt. But the stunning sound design, experienced in a proper cinema, could be what pushes it over the edge. I've heard it's unforgettable.

On the other hand, the Philippines might be reaching a bit with their selection. Lav Diaz is, without a doubt, a masterful filmmaker, but *Magellan*, while significantly shorter than his usual epic-length films (only 160 minutes!), might still be a tough sell for some voters. It's a biopic of the 16th-century Portuguese explorer, starring Gael García Bernal. Don't get me wrong, Bernal is fantastic, but even with his star power, it might be a hard sell to get voters to commit to a historical epic from a director known for his extended running times. We'll see, of course. That's the beauty of the Oscars – you just never know who's going to connect with voters in a given year. Stay tuned!
