Okay, kaiju fans, listen up! Amazon has just restocked the absolutely legendary Criterion Collection box set, "Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954-1975," and the price is insane. We're talking $112.48, people! That's nearly half off the original $225 price tag. I remember when this set first came out; I almost choked on my coffee when I saw the price. Now's the time to pounce.
Godzilla Fans Rejoice! Criterion Collection 50% Of...
And the timing couldn't be better. Criterion's big half-off sale ends this weekend, December 7th. According to the big A itself, orders placed today should arrive before Christmas. This 15-film collection always flies off the shelves during these sales, so the restock is a real holiday miracle for monster movie buffs. I know what I'm asking Santa for (or, you know, buying myself).
But wait, there's more! As if that wasn't enough to send Godzilla fans into a frenzy, Amazon's also slashed the price of the 4K Blu-ray edition of "Godzilla vs. Biollante" to a measly $20. I saw this one in the theater back in the day... Biollante is *creepy*, man.
For those not in the know, the Showa-Era collection is a deep dive into Godzilla's golden age. We're talking 15 classic films, showcasing the big guy at his most imaginative and action-packed. These aren't just some slapped-together transfers either. We're talking new HD transfers, both English and Japanese language tracks, tons of archival interviews, and a wealth of bonus material. Plus, the set comes with a gorgeous deluxe hardcover book and some seriously cool artwork on the packaging. It's a collector's dream.
"Godzilla vs. Biollante," which joined the Criterion Collection earlier this year, has also been lovingly restored to its original aspect ratio in native 4K (2160p) with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound track. And the subs? New English translation, baby! It's a blend of sci-fi, horror, and action that really set the stage for the Heisei era. While not strictly necessary, it does act as a sequel to 1994's "The Return of Godzilla," so if you're a completionist (like yours truly), you'll want to grab it.
The 4K Blu-ray edition is currently discounted by 60%, matching the price of the standard Blu-ray. That's right, you get the 4K edition *and* a standard Blu-ray disc. No-brainer, right? And for the purists out there, the original 1954 "Godzilla" film is also available in a native 4K (2160p) edition. It lacks surround sound, but it does feature the original uncompressed mono audio. Plus, the 4K edition comes with a foldout case with pop-up Godzilla artwork. It's seriously rad. Happy viewing!
