So, the Resident Evil rumor mill is churning again, and this time it's all about Resident Evil Requiem. Specifically, everyone's buzzing about Grace Ashcroft, the new protagonist. Turns out, she's the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, that reporter lady from… wait for it… Resident Evil Outbreak. Cue the collective "Who?" from a large chunk of the fanbase. I'll admit, even I had to double-check my RE lore on that one. But, the question remains: Why is this suddenly a big deal?
Speedo Zombie Apocalypse?! Resident Evil Super Rep...
Alyssa Ashcroft, for those who need a refresher (and let's be honest, most of us do), was one of the eight playable characters in Resident Evil Outbreak, which hit the PlayStation 2 way back in March of 2004. Think of it as a sort of B-side to the main Raccoon City disaster. The game dropped you smack-dab in the middle of the T-virus chaos, a mere couple of days after everything went sideways. You, along with a motley crew – a cop, a war vet, a bartender, a surgeon – had to navigate five different scenarios, all while dodging zombies and trying not to become lunch.
Outbreak was... well, it was different. It wasn't the best-received entry, truth be told, and it's often overlooked. But it had its charm. I remember playing it back in the day. It was a bold attempt at something new for the franchise. And Alyssa, while not exactly a series icon, was a solid character. Her investigative reporter background definitely added a unique flavor to the survival horror mix. Now she is important all of a sudden, so that's great!
If you are craving a nostalgia trip, or just want to see what all the fuss is about, Game Informer is doing a playthrough! Marcus Stewart and Charles Harte are diving into Outbreak for a two-hour stint, streaming live on Twitch and YouTube starting at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET today. If you can't catch it live (because, you know, adulting), they'll be uploading it to the Game Informer YouTube channel. They've been working their way through the game for a while now, so there are plenty of episodes to binge. You can find links to all the previous episodes above in the document.
It's always fun to see these older games get some love. I mean, who knows, maybe Requiem will retroactively make Outbreak a must-play. Either way, it's a good excuse to revisit a slightly weird, but undeniably interesting, corner of the Resident Evil universe. And hey, maybe we'll finally find out what Alyssa was investigating before the zombie apocalypse ruined everything. Stay tuned!
