Miami is about to become the latest hotspot in the ongoing, incredibly complex diplomatic dance surrounding the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian and US officials are scheduled to meet there today, Friday, to hash out the latest iteration of Washington's proposed peace plan, according to a source within Kyiv. It's a story with more twists and turns than a Florida highway.
Ukraine-US Talks in Miami: What Critical Decision ...
This meeting follows a whirlwind of back-channel discussions and official pronouncements. Apparently, another meeting was planned for yesterday, Thursday, also in sunny Florida, though details remain, shall we say, opaque. The big question everyone's asking: are US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, that familiar face from the previous administration, involved? While there’s been no official confirmation, whispers from inside suggest they are indeed playing a role in this delicate dance.
"Another meeting is expected today," Oleksandr Bevz, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, told AFP. That single sentence speaks volumes about the sheer intensity of diplomatic efforts being poured into finding a resolution. You have to wonder how exhausting this must be for everyone involved, constantly flying between continents, trying to bridge seemingly insurmountable divides.
Now, the rumored details of the initial US plan were...controversial, to put it mildly. We're talking about suggestions of territorial concessions from Ukraine in exchange for security assurances that, crucially, stopped short of full-blown NATO membership. Unsurprisingly, that version didn't exactly set the world on fire. A revised draft, supposedly hammered out in consultation with Ukrainian, European, and US officials, reportedly got a cold reception from Moscow earlier this week. So, back to the drawing board, it seems.
Mykhailo Podolyak, another advisor to Zelenskyy, is keeping his cards close to his chest. "The diplomatic process takes place mostly behind the scenes," he posted on social media Friday. Which, let's be honest, is pretty much how all important diplomacy works. The real deals are rarely made in front of cameras.
Podolyak did, however, reiterate Ukraine's desire for an end to the war and their willingness to negotiate. "The United States wants a pragmatic process and a quick end to the war, expecting compromises from both sides," he added. That last part is key, isn't it? "Compromises from both sides." The million-dollar question, of course, is what those compromises will look like, and whether they'll be acceptable to either side, let alone the global community. We’ll be watching closely from here.
