Dakota Johnson, known for her captivating performances on screen, recently pulled back the curtain on her experiences as a producer, and what she revealed wasn't always pretty. Speaking at the Red Sea Film Festival, the actress didn't shy away from discussing the less glamorous aspects of the filmmaking business, offering a refreshingly honest perspective on her dual roles.
Dakota Johnson's SHOCKING Confession: The Dark Sid...
Johnson launched TeaTime Pictures in 2019 with Ro Donnelly, a former Netflix executive, and for her, venturing into producing felt like a logical progression. Growing up in a family steeped in Hollywood – her parents are Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith – she witnessed the inner workings of film sets from a young age. "I grew up in this industry," she explained. "I grew up on set watching my parents work and watching how they would engage with filmmakers, producers, and collaborators, and I always wanted to be a larger part of the project."
TeaTime Pictures has a slate of intriguing projects on the horizon, including the sci-fi action flick *Trudy Blue* and *A Tree Is Blue*, which marks Johnson's directorial debut. *A Tree Is Blue* is especially interesting because it's written by and stars Vanessa Burghardt, an autistic actress who also co-starred in *Cha Cha Real Smooth*, TeaTime's debut production. During the talk, Johnson remained understandably discreet about specific details and didn't provide an update on *A Tree Is Blue*. Filmmaking is a long process, and keeping things close to the vest until the timing is right is pretty standard, so no big surprise there.
One of the most compelling parts of Johnson's discussion was her reflection on personal growth within the industry. "I’m learning more how to choose what’s right for me," she shared. "I’ve definitely been persuaded to do some things in the past I realized in retrospect weren’t right for me, but that’s also part of the experience." It's a sentiment that resonates deeply, as many creatives – and honestly, anyone in any profession – can relate to the feeling of navigating their career path and learning from past decisions.
Johnson emphasized her desire to push her boundaries as an actress. "Now I’m looking at… where is this person in me and how can I stretch myself. I want to evolve more and as an actress go to places I don’t think I was able to go, I want to expel things, there’s a lot I need to get out and I think I can find projects where I can do that," she explained. This kind of vulnerability and drive to explore new creative avenues is really exciting to see. But here’s the kicker: despite all the acting success, Johnson admitted that producing, surprisingly, is more challenging. "You see behind the curtain and it's ugly," she quipped. While she didn't elaborate on the specifics, it's a pretty telling statement about the realities of filmmaking beyond the red carpet glamour.
