Artnet is gearing up for what promises to be a blockbuster end to the year with its Important Winter Sale Live Auction, scheduled to run from December 10th to 12th. For those of us in the art world, this is definitely one to mark on your calendars. We'll be providing comprehensive coverage, so keep an eye out for our updates and analysis throughout the sale.
Art World Shaken! Secret Masterpieces Up for Grabs...
The auction is slated to feature some truly significant works, with pieces by art world heavyweights like David Hockney and Jim Dine leading the charge. Hockney, of course, needs no introduction. His vibrant colors and distinctive style have made him a household name, and any piece of his on the market is sure to attract serious attention. Dine, with his iconic imagery and explorations of everyday objects, will no doubt be another major draw. It’s shaping up to be a truly curated selection.
While we're eagerly anticipating the Artnet auction, the art world is buzzing with activity on multiple fronts. Katya Kazakina's report on Miami Basel reveals strong sales, especially in the digital art sector. It seems NFTs and digital installations are really starting to make their mark, drawing crowds and capturing the attention of collectors. Over in Brussels, things took a decidedly less celebratory turn, as Richard Whiddington reported on the theft of a Baby Jesus figure from a Nativity artwork, sparking understandable outrage. You just can't make this stuff up.
Meanwhile, Art Miami saw Lucy Sparrow bring her signature felted sugar rush to the fair, offering a playful and whimsical counterpoint to some of the more serious offerings. Sarah Cascone’s coverage sounds like a much-needed dose of fun. In Qatar, a new museum dedicated to M.F. Husain, the 'Picasso of India,' has opened its doors, offering a fascinating glimpse into the life and work of this important artist. Jo Lawson's report paints a vivid picture of this cultural landmark.
And for a bit of a change of pace, Alina Cohen takes us to Champagne Country, where Sam Falls is rewilding the landscape through a new series of works. It’s always interesting to see art interacting with and reflecting the environment. For those of you who are interested in art history, be sure to check out Verity Babbs' piece on Michelangelo's overlooked foray into military architecture, Annikka Olsen's exploration of the untold story behind pop art's most famous word, and the Artnet News partnership with Sotheby’s Institute of Art on how a major commission drove Mark Rothko to rage and rejection. It’s a potent reminder that behind the masterpieces, there are often complex and turbulent stories.
Looking ahead, don't miss these highlights from Artnet Auctions & Galleries: David Hockney's *Pretty Tulips, February, 1970* at Artnet Auctions; *Retroprojection III: Unreleased Qajar series* by Firouz Farmanfarmaian at Juncture Gallery; Ron Norsworthy's *American Dream* at Edwynn Houk Gallery; *Picasso.
