Hold onto your hats, history buffs and faith enthusiasts! For the first time ever, the elusive tomb of Saint Peter, tucked away within the Vatican Necropolis, is about to be unveiled on film. And who better to guide us on this journey than the charismatic Chris Pratt? Yes, Star-Lord himself is headlining this intriguing documentary that delves into the very discovery of the Apostle’s final resting place.
Chris Pratt & Vatican's Shocking Discovery?! Tomb ...
Filming is currently underway, deep beneath the iconic St. Peter’s Basilica within the ancient Vatican Necropolis – a burial ground teeming with history. It’s a collaborative effort, bringing together Vatican Media, the Fabbrica di San Pietro (the institution responsible for maintaining the basilica), and Spain’s AF Films. The project is still untitled, but the anticipation is already building.
Pratt, with his relatable everyman persona, will be our guide through the life and times of Saint Peter. Behind the camera is Spanish director Paula Ortiz, with a script crafted by Andrea Tornielli, all under the watchful advisory eye of Vatican expert Pietro Zande. Mark your calendars, because the documentary is slated to drop in 2026, perfectly timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the dedication of the current St. Peter’s Basilica on November 18, 1626. Talk about a monumental celebration!
“It is an extraordinary honor to partner with Pope Leo and the Vatican on this project,” Pratt shared in a statement. “St. Peter’s story is foundational to the Christian faith, and I’m deeply grateful for the trust and access granted to help bring his legacy to the screen.” It’s a pretty powerful statement, reflecting the weight and significance of this undertaking. It almost makes you want to brush up on your New Testament readings, doesn’t it?
The Basilica’s very existence is inextricably linked to Peter, the humble fisherman from Galilee chosen by Jesus to lead the early church. He met his martyrdom in Rome on Vatican Hill around 64 AD, and his burial site quickly became a central point of veneration. Christians, eager to be as close as possible to their leader in death, sought to be buried nearby, creating a vast and historically rich necropolis.
The documentary promises "an exciting journey through time, through exclusive images never seen before," a tantalizing peek into the past leading us right to Peter's tomb. Emperor Constantine, recognizing the site’s importance, took great pains to preserve it. He actually leveled Vatican Hill to construct the first large Basilica, incorporating the tomb as its centerpiece. The film will painstakingly explore the historical evidence and archaeological discoveries that ultimately led to the identification of the Apostle's burial place within the Vatican Necropolis. The official announcement of the discovery was made in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, following excavations he initiated a decade earlier. Imagine being part of that discovery team!
Further research, driven by unwavering faith and scientific inquiry, led Pope Paul VI to declare in 1968 that Peter's bones had been found: “The relics of Peter have been identified in a way that we can consider convincing… We have reason to believe that the few, but sacrosanct, mortal remains of the Prince of the Apostles have been found.” Whether you're a devout believer or simply a lover of history, this documentary promises to be a fascinating exploration of faith, archaeology, and the enduring power of legacy.
