Former KBO MVP Kim Jae-hwan has a new lease on his baseball career. After a somewhat surprising release from the Doosan Bears last month, the veteran slugger has inked a deal with the SSG Landers.

Kim Jae-hwan SHOCK! Ex-MVP Lands With Landers – Wh...

The Landers officially announced the signing of the 37-year-old Kim on Friday, securing him with a two-year contract that could reach a total value of 2.2 billion won, or roughly $1.5 million. The breakdown of the deal is pretty standard: 1 billion won in salary, a 600 million won signing bonus to seal the deal, and another 600 million won dangled as performance-based incentives.

Interestingly, this move sees Kim returning to familiar territory. Incheon, the city where the Landers play, is also where Kim honed his skills in middle and high school. Maybe a return to his roots will spark something special?

For those who might have missed the initial news, Kim, the 2018 KBO regular-season MVP, was released by the Doosan Bears back on November 26th. He was coming off a four-year contract that expired after the 2025 season. Here's where it gets a little unusual: instead of simply becoming a free agent, Kim initially tried to work out a new deal with the Bears. When negotiations stalled, a specific clause kicked in, leading to his unconditional release. That's a key detail.

Usually, when a team snags a free agent, they have to compensate the player's old team with some combination of cash and players, or just straight cash. But, since Kim was unconditionally released after those failed talks with the Bears, the Landers could sign him without any strings attached. Smart move by the Landers, I think.

The Landers, who are definitely looking to inject some life into their offense, clearly see Kim as a valuable asset. They're banking on his veteran experience and power-hitting abilities to make a significant impact. And looking at his career numbers, it's easy to see why.

Kim's KBO journey started with the Bears back in 2008, but his true breakout didn't come until 2016. That year, he blasted 36 home runs and drove in 124 runs, finishing third in the league. Then, in 2018, he reached the pinnacle, earning MVP honors by leading the KBO with a staggering 44 home runs and 133 RBIs. From 2016 through 2022, he was one of the most feared power hitters in the league, racking up 263 home runs, second only to one other player in that period.

His home run numbers did dip a bit in recent years, though. After hitting 23 in 2022, he managed only 10 in 2023. He bounced back with 29 in 2024, but then settled for 13 home runs with a .241 batting average in 2025. Still, the Landers are focusing on his overall production and, crucially, his performance at their home stadium.

The Landers emphasized that Kim still boasts a solid .783 OPS (On-Base Plus Slugging) over the past three seasons. Even more appealing, his OPS jumps to an impressive .802 when playing at Incheon SSG Landers Field, which is known to be a hitter-friendly park. Seems like they've done their homework.

"He has been one of the league's best power hitters over the past three years, and we expect him to thrive at our home stadium," the Landers stated. "His hard-hit rate and barrel rate from the 2025 season would have placed him second on our team. We expect him to provide a significant boost to the heart of our lineup." They also highlighted how Kim's experience and leadership can benefit their younger players.

Kim himself seems pretty pumped about the opportunity. "I see this opportunity as the final challenge of my baseball career," Kim said. "I will try my best to ensure this will not go to waste and deliver only great results for Landers fans." We'll see if he can deliver on that promise.
