Spain is gearing up for a seriously strange weather experience this long weekend. Just when we thought winter was settling in, a blast of subtropical air is heading our way, promising temperatures more suited to spring than the December bank holiday. It's the kind of thing that makes you want to dust off the barbecue, but maybe hold off on the sangria just yet.
Long Weekend Weather SHOCKER! Is Your BBQ Doomed?!
Forecasters are predicting highs of up to 24ºC in some areas, which is pretty remarkable for this time of year. Meteored, the weather gurus, are calling it an "abnormally warm subtropical air mass," and it's expected to bring a period of stable and significantly warmer weather across much of the country. The peak of the heat is expected between Saturday and Wednesday next week.
So, what's behind this sudden change? Well, it's all thanks to an anticyclonic ridge that's decided to park itself over Spain. This high-pressure system is essentially acting as a shield, blocking the usual winter storms and allowing that lovely warm air to dominate. The most noticeable effect, according to Meteored, will be a general rise in both daytime and nighttime temperatures – a welcome change after some pretty chilly weather recently.
But before you pack away your winter coat completely, there's a bit of a catch. While some areas are basking in sunshine, others are in for some rain. That warm, moist Atlantic air mass is also bringing showers along for the ride. Mallorca, Valencia, and Almeria are expecting a good soaking on Friday and Saturday, and pretty much all of northern Spain can expect some rainfall, too. It's a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest.
And that's not all. This unusual combination of warmth and moisture is also creating prime conditions for fog, especially in inland areas and valleys. We’re talking about the kind of fog that can really reduce visibility, so if you're planning on hitting the roads this weekend, be extra careful. Seriously, check those traffic reports and take it slow. Safety first, people.
So, there you have it: a long weekend of rising temperatures, potential rainfall, and possible fog. It’s definitely not your typical December weather, but hey, at least we can look forward to saving a few euros on the heating bill. And who knows, maybe we’ll even get a chance to enjoy a bit of sunshine before the proper winter arrives. Just remember to check the latest updates from AEMET before you head out, and drive safely!
