Okay, Disney fans, let's talk 4K. If you're anything like me, you've probably been eyeing those shiny UHD discs, wondering if now's the time to finally ditch the Blu-rays and upgrade your animated Disney and Pixar collection. The good news? It's getting there. The bad news? It's still a bit of a mixed bag. But hey, isn't that always the way with these things?
Disney Vaults Unlocked?! Every 4K Animated Classic...
Disney's been slowly but surely dipping their toes into the 4K waters, particularly when it comes to their live-action remakes. We're talking visually stunning titles like the recent *The Little Mermaid*, *The Lion King*, and even older classics like *Snow White* and *Aladdin* getting that extra bit of visual polish. Basically, if it had a big theatrical release and looks good with computer-generated imagery, chances are it's available (or will be soon) in 4K. Most films released after *The Princess and the Frog* are also available. Which is great, unless you’re REALLY hoping for a fully restored *Sleeping Beauty* in all its 4K glory. We're still waiting on that one, folks.
And then there's Pixar. Now, Pixar is where things get interesting. They're actually ahead of the curve here! Out of their 29 films, a whopping 26 are readily available to buy in 4K. That's a pretty solid ratio. The exceptions? *Toy Story 3*, which seems a bit strange, and *Cars 2* (though I've seen it pop up on Amazon for prices that would make even Mater blush). Oh, and *Elemental* – but that was a Disney Movie Club exclusive, and if you blinked, you missed it. Seriously, those things disappeared faster than a free churro at Disneyland.
Of course, we can't forget about Disney+ Premium. If you’re subscribed, you can stream a selection of Disney movies in 4K. It's not a perfect solution – not every animated film is available in the format on the platform – but many digitally remastered titles do offer streaming in 4K quality. It's a decent option if you're not a physical media purist like some of us.
So, is now the time to build that ultimate Disney 4K library? It really depends. If you're a die-hard Pixar fan, absolutely. If you're mainly interested in the live-action remakes and the more recent animated releases, then go for it. For those seeking a broader selection of 4K releases, consult our guide to upcoming 4K and Blu-ray releases for a comprehensive overview of what's on the horizon. But keep in mind, the classics are still trickling in. Patience, young Padawans, patience.
