Messi's MLS Dream on the Line! Will Inter Miami Conquer Vancouver?

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are gearing up for a showdown with Thomas Müller and Vancouver in Saturday's MLS Cup final, a clash that's buzzing with potential storylines and historical significance. It feels like the end of one era and maybe the dawn of another down in Miami.

Messi's MLS Dream on the Line! Will Inter Miami Co...

For Messi, this final game is more than just a match. It’s the curtain call at Inter Miami's current home before they move into their shiny new digs near Miami International Airport next season. More poignantly, it's likely the last hurrah for Messi alongside his longtime Barcelona buddies Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, both rumored to be hanging up their boots after Saturday's game, and possibly even Luis Suárez. Talk about the end of an era!

"I’m very grateful for the career I’ve had…it’s been a privilege," Alba said, acknowledging the emotional weight of the week. "Yes, it’s a week with a lot of emotions, knowing that it’s going to be my last game...and hopefully, I end my career in the best possible scenario, in a final — and we win." You can feel the pressure, the excitement, and the bittersweet sentiment radiating from his words.

Beyond the personal narratives, this match is brimming with potential firsts. If Vancouver pulls off a victory, Müller would become the first player to hoist both a World Cup and an MLS Cup trophy. Conversely, an Inter Miami triumph would etch Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Busquets into the history books as the first trio to achieve the World Cup and MLS champion double. That’s quite the bragging right!

"We are going to have four World Cup winners on the pitch," said Mascherano, highlighting the sheer star power on display. "I think it’s very, very interesting for the league." It really is a testament to how far MLS has come.

Müller, a seasoned veteran with over 30 trophies under his belt, understands the gravity of the MLS Cup. "That’s a good line, ah?" he quipped, acknowledging the high stakes. He knows a thing or two about winning, and he clearly wants to add another trophy to his already impressive collection.

For Inter Miami, this final is a chance to validate the massive investment made in bringing the Barcelona legends stateside. For Vancouver, who actually defeated Inter Miami twice this season in the CONCACAF Champions League, it's a golden opportunity to etch their name on a trophy by overcoming Messi and his star-studded squad.

"Obviously, they were much better than us in April," Mascherano admitted. "But the situation is not the same. We are in a different situation...We arrive to this final with confidence...and we know that they have a very, very good team." They’ve clearly learned from those earlier defeats.

Inter Miami has been on a tear, racking up a 10-2-1 record in their last 13 matches, including some dominant playoff performances. Vancouver, while solid with a 7-1-5 record in their last 13, has shown some vulnerability defensively, conceding 17 goals in their last 17 matches against MLS opposition. That could be their Achilles heel on Saturday.

History leans towards the home team, with the home side winning 11 of the last 14 MLS Cup titles. Vancouver did secure a victory at Inter Miami in the CONCACAF semifinals back in April, but Inter Miami has since transformed into a fortress at home, boasting a 16-2-2 record across all competitions. It’s going to be an electric atmosphere in Miami, that’s for sure.
