PBS's *Independent Lens* is gearing up for a powerful winter season, and it's kicking off with some serious heat. The Emmy-winning documentary series has just announced its winter lineup, and it's anchored by *The Librarians*, a film already generating Oscar buzz. I’ve been following this one for a while, and it’s definitely a timely and important piece.

Oscar Buzz Lands on PBS?! The Librarians Take Cent...

Directed by Kim A. Snyder, *The Librarians* tackles the increasingly fraught battle over book bans in the United States. It's not just about dusty shelves and quiet reading rooms anymore; this film promises an "unflinching look" at the frontlines of a cultural war. And with Sarah Jessica Parker involved, you know this project has some serious weight behind it. The premiere is set for February 9th, so mark your calendars.

But *The Librarians* isn't the only gem in this winter season's crown. *Independent Lens* is also bringing back its *Indie Lens Pop-Up* community screening series. This is a great initiative, really. They're planning in-person and virtual events in over 200 communities across almost every state, fostering conversations sparked by these thought-provoking documentaries. They say it's reached nearly half a million people before, and that's a testament to the power of these films to spark dialogue.

And the best part? All the films announced will be available for streaming on the PBS app and PBS YouTube channel the day they premiere. So, no excuses for missing out! *Independent Lens* has a history of showcasing incredible documentaries, including the Oscar-nominated *I Am Not Your Negro* and the Peabody-winning *Philly D.A.* – they really know how to pick 'em.

The winter slate is diverse and impactful. Before *The Librarians*, we have *Vivien’s Wild Ride* on January 26th, following legendary film editor Vivien Hillgrove as she navigates vision loss and reinvents herself as an artist. Then, on February 23rd, *The Inquisitor* explores the life and legacy of Barbara Jordan, a true trailblazer in U.S. politics. And rounding things out on March 23rd is *Keep Quiet and Forgive*, a film about an Amish child sexual assault survivor breaking her silence – a story that is sure to be incredibly powerful and moving.

It's worth noting that ITVS, the producer of the series, relies on support from various organizations, including the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Given the recent attempts to defund the CPB, particularly during the previous administration, it's crucial to remember the importance of supporting public broadcasting and the vital role it plays in bringing these kinds of stories to a wider audience. This winter season of *Independent Lens* looks like it's going to be a must-watch.
