Walton Goggins, the man who brilliantly embodies The Ghoul in the new "Fallout" series, has just dropped a bombshell: he's never played the games and, perhaps even more surprisingly, has absolutely no intention of ever picking up a controller. Seems a bit odd, right? Especially considering the show's massive success and the deep connection so many fans have with the source material.
Walton Goggins' Shocking Admission: Why He'll NEVE...
In a recent interview with PC Gamer leading up to the "Fallout" Season 2 premiere (scheduled for December 17th, mark your calendars!), Goggins stated bluntly, "I haven't sat down to play the games. And I won't. I won't. I won't play the games. I'm not interested." Strong words! You’ve got to respect the conviction, even if it goes against what you might expect.
So, what's his reasoning? Well, Goggins explained that it's all about preserving the integrity of his performance as The Ghoul. He fears that immersing himself in the game world would fundamentally alter his perspective on the character and the universe he inhabits on screen. He doesn't want to experience it as a player, but rather as a real entity within that fictional world.
"All of a sudden, I'm looking at this world from a very different perspective, and as something on a screen in which I am an avatar in. I don't believe that I'm an avatar. I believe The Ghoul exists in the world. I believe that Cooper Howard exists in the world," Goggins elaborated. It's a fascinating approach, and you can see how deeply he's invested in portraying these characters authentically.
He further emphasized that his commitment to the character and the fans is paramount. "The best way that I can serve this world and serve the fans of this game, I think, is to go to work every single day and believe the circumstances that I'm presented with." It's a testament to his dedication as an actor; he is fully embracing the role, even if it means staying away from the games that inspired it all.
Interestingly, Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, shares Goggins' sentiment. He admitted that he also hasn't played the "Fallout" games and feels he "can't play them now" while actively working on the show. He hinted that he might consider diving in after his involvement concludes. Ella Purnell, on the other hand, took a different route, playing "Fallout 4" to prepare for Season 1. She found it "really fun and exciting," though she admitted it didn't directly inform her performance since Lucy isn't a game character.
While we eagerly await an official announcement for "Fallout" Season 3, the "Fallout" universe continues to evolve. "Fallout 76" recently received the "Burning Springs" update, which introduced Goggins' Ghoul and a new region. And Bethesda is currently in the early stages of developing "Fallout 5," so there's plenty more to look forward to, whether you're a gamer, a TV show enthusiast, or, like Walton Goggins, strictly the latter.
