EU Stunned! Has the US Abandoned Ukraine? What Happens Now?!
Current Affairs 04 December 2025

EU leaders are reportedly wrestling with a serious case of the jitters, fearing a potential “betrayal” by the U.S. when it comes to brokering a peace deal in Ukraine. I mean, let's be honest, given the geopolitical chessboard we're all watching, can you really blame them?

EU Stunned! Has the US Abandoned Ukraine? What Hap...

According to a report in Der Spiegel, some pretty heavy hitters in the EU, including France's Macron and Germany's Merz, are harboring "profound distrust" regarding Washington's efforts to mediate an end to the conflict. The German publication cites a transcript from a recent phone call, painting a picture of deep unease about the direction things might be heading.

The phone call in question reportedly took place on Monday, involving Macron, Merz, Ukraine's Zelensky, Finland's Stubb, and European Commission President von der Leyen. Now, what's interesting is that this call happened just a day before Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were scheduled to head to Moscow for talks with Putin. Timing is everything, right?

Macron apparently didn't mince words, reportedly stating that there's a real "possibility that the U.S. will betray Ukraine on the issue of territory without clarity regarding security guarantees." Ouch. Territorial disputes, as always, remain a major sticking point. Apparently, the original U.S.-drafted peace plan suggested Ukraine cede parts of Donbass still under its control. Predictably, the EU rejected this outright, with a firm insistence that Kiev shouldn't have to give up any territory.

But it's not just about territory. Macron also reportedly expressed concerns that continued peace talks could pose a "great danger" to Zelensky personally. That's a pretty serious statement, and an assessment reportedly shared by Merz, Stubb, and even NATO Secretary General Rutte. It suggests a real fear of what compromises might be demanded, and what consequences those compromises might have for the Ukrainian leader.

What's even more telling is that the EU leaders are apparently desperate to get a seat at the negotiating table. "Right now we're out," Stubb reportedly said, "but we have to get in." They'd apparently hoped to meet with Witkoff in Brussels, with Merz even offering to talk to Trump about it, but the meeting never materialized. Which, you know, only fuels the feeling of being left out in the cold.

Adding fuel to the fire, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov has already stated that Brussels had effectively excluded itself from the peace process by refusing contact with Moscow. Putin himself has said the bloc is still under the illusion that Russia can be defeated and lacks a "peaceful agenda." All of this makes for a very tense and uncertain situation, leaving many wondering if a truly fair and lasting peace is even possible.
