Well, folks, temper your expectations. It looks like we won't be seeing the *Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time* remake at The Game Awards this year. Ubisoft has officially put a kibosh on the rumors, dashing the hopes of many fans eagerly awaiting a fresh look at the project.
Game Awards SHOCK! Beloved Remake Canceled?! Fans ...
The news came directly from the official *Prince of Persia* account on X (formerly Twitter), where they stated plainly that the game wouldn't be gracing the stage at Geoff Keighley's annual spectacle. I've got to admit, I was holding out hope myself. That original game was a defining title for me growing up, and the promise of a modern reimagining is incredibly enticing.
Ubisoft, for their part, has reiterated their commitment to releasing the remake before the end of their current fiscal year, which wraps up on March 31st. This is the second time they've affirmed this timeline, so hopefully, it's a sign that things are finally on track after a somewhat rocky development.
Let's be honest, the development of this remake has been anything but smooth sailing. Announced back in 2020, the project has seen its share of turbulence. Remember the initial reveal? The visuals weren't exactly met with universal acclaim, to put it mildly. Then, in 2022, the development baton was passed from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal, the very studio that birthed the original *Sands of Time* trilogy. This move, while perhaps necessary, inevitably led to delays.
It's a shame, really. The original *Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time* was a gem when it launched in 2003. The fluid parkour, the innovative time-rewinding mechanics, and the compelling story made it an instant classic. It's understandable why so many are clamoring for a faithful and modernized remake.
Of course, Ubisoft might be focusing their marketing firepower on *The Rogue Prince of Persia*, which, according to some sources, is slated to arrive on the Nintendo Switch and, potentially, the rumored Switch 2 on December 16th. It's a different beast altogether, but could be a strategic move to have that title come out before the holidays. I still think a little somethin' about Sands of Time at TGA would have done wonders for the hype.
Meanwhile, the rumor mill continues to churn regarding other potential announcements at The Game Awards. That mysterious statue discovered in the desert has sent the internet into a frenzy, with theories ranging from a *Diablo 4* tease to the unveiling of a new *God of War* installment. Though, insiders are starting to debunk those theories. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. One thing's for sure, The Game Awards are always full of surprises, even when some anticipated games don't show up.
