Alfaz del Pi is gearing up for a major transformation, folks. In 2026, the town's historic center is slated for a serious makeover, with plans centered around pedestrianization and improved accessibility. It's a project designed to breathe new life into the heart of this lovely little town.
Alfaz del Pi's Historic Transformation: Will it Sa...
Mayor Vicente Arques unveiled the ambitious project at the annual Christmas media briefing, calling it a "cornerstone" for the upcoming term. The guy was clearly buzzing with excitement. He also took the time to reflect on the past year's successes and lay out the council's vision for the future. Honestly, these briefings can be a bit dry sometimes, but you could tell this project was something special to him.
The project, a fully-funded council initiative with a budget of €842,295.48, will focus on completely revamping Federico García Lorca Street, Plaza Mayor, and the surrounding areas. They're aiming for an eight-month turnaround, which seems pretty ambitious, but if they pull it off, it'll be quite the accomplishment.
The core goals are pretty straightforward: prioritize pedestrians, improve accessibility for everyone (which is always a plus), modernize the aging infrastructure, and give the town center a fresh, modern vibe that still respects Alfaz del Pi's unique character. It's a delicate balance, but it sounds like they're aiming for a blend of old-world charm and contemporary functionality.
Arques was keen to emphasize that 2026 will be a big year for culture in Alfaz del Pi. The town will be celebrating the centennial of Escoles Velles, the 35th anniversary of the Casa de Cultura, and the 15th anniversary of the Villa Romana de l’Albir Open-Air Museum. Seems like the perfect time to spruce things up and celebrate the town's rich history.
He ended his briefing with a message of good cheer, wishing residents "health, employment, and a local administration that continues to work with honesty and dedication." It's the kind of sentiment you expect to hear, but it's also a reminder that these projects are all about improving the lives of the people who call Alfaz del Pi home.
Looking back on the past year, the mayor also highlighted the ongoing implementation of the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plans (PSTD 2022 and 2023), which are supported by hefty European grants totaling €4,443,000. These plans have already brought improvements to Camí Vell d’Altea, the Paseo de las Estrellas platform, and other key areas. The fact that they’re leveraging European funds is a smart move, freeing up local resources for other important initiatives. Good governance, right there.
The 2026 project’s central component involves pedestrianizing Federico García Lorca Street between the Town Hall and Plaza Jaume I, as well as completely overhauling Plaza Mayor. The plan is to remove physical obstacles, level uneven surfaces, organize public spaces, add some much-needed greenery for shade, and create a fully accessible and functional environment for both residents and visitors. Honestly, it sounds like exactly what that area needs.
Right now, the area's plagued by worn pavements, outdated utilities and lighting, and a confusing mix of pedestrian and vehicle traffic. A total transformation is definitely in order, and I, for one, am excited to see what they come up with. I guess we'll all have to wait and see how it unfolds, but it definitely sounds promising.
