Joe Root STUNS Australia! Century Ignites Ashes Battle!

Well, they can’t say he can’t do it anymore, can they? Joe Root, after years of trying, finally chalked up that elusive Test century on Australian soil. It happened on the opening day of the second Ashes Test in Brisbane, silencing a fair few doubters (myself perhaps included, just a little bit!).

It’s been a long time coming. This was his 30th innings in Australia, and the pressure was really on. You could feel it. The pre-series build-up was relentless, all focused on whether Root could crack the code. He answered, and in some style.

Things started pretty shaky for England. When Root walked out, they were reeling at 5-2 in the third over! Talk about walking into a pressure cooker. He even got a life early on, dropped on two, which I'm sure he was thankful for. He then had to watch wickets fall at the other end – it wasn't exactly a smooth ride. But Root, as he always does, just dug in. He showed incredible resilience, really anchoring the innings and providing some much-needed stability.

The moment he reached his century was classic Root – understated and classy. A flick to fine leg, off came the helmet, a quiet acknowledgement to the crowd. No wild celebrations, just pure, quiet satisfaction. It was the 40th Test century of his career, a remarkable achievement, and it came with England sitting at 256-7.

I loved Jonathan Agnew’s commentary on the BBC when Root reached the milestone. "Joe Root has done it," he exclaimed. "Largely written off by the Australian media, but it has been that kind of trip. He has fought so hard for this. That will quieten a few critics." And you know what? He's absolutely right. It's one thing to perform at home, but to do it here, in the face of that Australian attack and all the Aussie sledging... it's something special.

The bigger picture? This century could be massive for England's chances in this Ashes series. It gives them a real foothold in the match after that disastrous start. And for Root personally? Well, this is a moment he'll cherish. It's proof that even the best can conquer their demons, and it's a reminder to never write anyone off. Especially Joe Root.
