Roblox BANNED in Russia! Is LGBTQ+ Propaganda to Blame?!
Gaming News 04 December 2025

Roblox, the massively popular online game platform, has been banned in Russia, adding to a growing list of Western tech companies facing restrictions in the country. The reason? According to Roskomnadzor, Russia's communications watchdog, Roblox is allegedly spreading LGBTQ+ propaganda and extremist content, specifically related to terrorism. This comes amidst ongoing criticism regarding the platform's child safety measures.

Roblox BANNED in Russia! Is LGBTQ+ Propaganda to B...

Roskomnadzor didn't mince words, describing Roblox as "rife with inappropriate content that can negatively impact the spiritual and moral development of children." They also cited reports of sexual harassment on the platform, painting a concerning picture for parents and regulators alike. It's a serious accusation, and one that directly clashes with Russia's increasingly conservative social policies.

Roblox, for their part, is pushing back. A spokesperson told Reuters that they "respect the local laws and regulations" of the countries they operate in. They also stressed that Roblox provides "a positive space for learning, creation and meaningful connection for everyone." They also emphasized the company's commitment to safety, highlighting a "robust set of proactive and preventative safety measures designed to catch and prevent harmful content." It's a familiar defense, and one that's becoming almost required boilerplate for any tech company facing similar scrutiny.

Now, it's no secret that Russia has been clamping down on Western media and tech platforms for some time. Roskomnadzor has a track record of restricting access to companies it deems to be in violation of Russian law. We're talking about major players like Duolingo, WhatsApp, and Telegram – and the agency even threatened to block WhatsApp entirely just last week. It's a clear pattern, and Roblox is just the latest casualty.

The context here is crucial. Russia has maintained anti-LGBT laws since 2013, effectively banning the "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships" to minors. So, any content that could be interpreted as promoting LGBTQ+ themes is likely to run afoul of these laws. But it's also worth noting that Roblox has faced legitimate criticism regarding its child safety measures, independently of Russian censorship. A report last year cited 13,316 instances of child exploitation reported on the platform. That’s a big number. And while Roblox has been working to improve safety, it's clearly an ongoing battle.

Interestingly, Russia isn't the first country to take this kind of action. Türkiye banned access to Roblox last year, citing similar concerns about "ensuring the protection of our children." And let's not forget that Roblox CEO David Baszucki recently made headlines for all the wrong reasons after a disastrous interview on the New York Times podcast Hard Fork. Describing the problem of predators on the platform as an "opportunity" isn't exactly reassuring to parents. While Roblox insists on its safety efforts, the ban, the criticisms, and the PR missteps are adding up, creating a troubling narrative around this hugely popular game.
