Calpe Wetland MIRACLE: Nature RECLAIMS Land From Concrete! You Won't Believe It!

Calpe Wetland MIRACLE: Nature RECLAIMS Land From Concrete! You Won't Believe It!
Current Affairs 04 December 2025

Les Salines wetland in Calpe, a little slice of natural heaven nestled amidst the concrete jungle of the Costa Blanca, is once again fighting for its life. I've been coming to this area for years, and frankly, it's heartbreaking to see the relentless march of development getting closer and closer. It's always a David and Goliath story – this time, trees versus cranes, nature versus progress...or at least, what some call progress.

Calpe Wetland MIRACLE: Nature RECLAIMS Land From C...

On one side, you have the towering high-rises that have sprung up in Calpe over the last few decades, a testament to a period of, shall we say, *unfettered* urban expansion. On the other, you have a growing movement of people determined to protect and revitalize Les Salines, a vital habitat for migrating birds and a beautiful space for locals and tourists alike. It's a tough battle, no doubt.

Thankfully, there's some good news to report. The Calpe Town Hall and the Alicante Renace project teamed up for an ecological restoration day recently, and it was inspiring to see so many people get involved. They planted 200 trees, focusing on native species like tetraclinis, rosemary, and carob. These aren't just pretty trees; they're crucial for the long-term health of the wetland, providing food and shelter for local wildlife and helping to stabilize the soil.

But the effort didn't stop there. Volunteers also scattered 1,000 seeds of Mediterranean herbaceous plants. The goal is to increase ground cover, which helps retain moisture and prevent erosion – a serious concern in an area increasingly affected by drought. Plus, it's all about biodiversity. The more diverse the plant life, the more resilient the ecosystem becomes.

And the best part? This isn't just happening in Calpe. Similar projects are popping up all along the Costa Blanca. In Denia, they're reforesting areas around Montgó Natural Park, and in Benidorm, they've even managed to create green spaces in the heart of the city. It's a reminder that even in the most urbanized areas, nature can still find a way to thrive, with a little help from us humans.

Look, it's easy to get discouraged when you see another high-rise going up. But these restoration efforts give me hope. They show that people care, that they're willing to put in the work to protect these precious natural spaces. It's going to be a long and difficult fight, but Les Salines, and the many people who support it, have a fighting chance.
