Winter Tires Grip Türkiye! Are YOU Ready for Icy Roads?

Winter is coming, and in Turkey, that means something other than just Game of Thrones references – it means a surge in winter tire sales. New data indicates that Turkish drivers are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of winter tires for safety. A whopping 6.8 million winter tires were sold in Turkey this year, broken down into 5.7 million for passenger vehicles and 1.1 million for light commercial vehicles. That's a lot of rubber hitting the road, and it's a sign that drivers are taking winter road safety more seriously.

I remember a few years back, driving in Istanbul in what I'd charitably call "slightly snowy" conditions, and it was…an experience. Let's just say seeing cars sliding sideways wasn't exactly calming. So, this increased adoption of winter tires is definitely a positive development. According to an Ipsos survey, 66% of passenger vehicle owners in Turkey are now using winter tires. With 16.8 million registered automobiles and 5.3 million light commercial vehicles in the country, that's a significant percentage of drivers making a smart choice.

The European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) data backs up the wisdom of this choice. They point out that winter tires can reduce braking distances by as much as 10% on wet surfaces and a staggering 18% on cold surfaces. That's a potentially life-saving difference when you consider the unpredictable winter weather that can hit Turkey.

Interestingly, the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) is adding another layer to the winter tire conversation. Because EVs are generally heavier than their gasoline-powered counterparts, thanks to those hefty battery packs, they place different demands on tires. Experts are now urging EV owners to consider specialized winter tires designed specifically for the unique characteristics of electric vehicles. It's not just about slapping on any old winter tire; it's about ensuring you have the right equipment for the job.

One company leading the charge in meeting this demand is Brisa, a major tire manufacturer in Turkey. They boast a wide range of winter tires, covering nearly 99% of the market with sizes ranging from 13-inch to 17-inch and beyond. They offer four main tread patterns and an impressive 250 size variations. This means there's likely a Brisa winter tire option for just about every vehicle on Turkish roads. Brisa also notes that EV and hybrid vehicle owners are particularly attuned to the benefits of winter tires, which makes sense given their generally more tech-savvy and safety-conscious profiles. They are pushing their premium tire lines developed with ENLITEN and Nexgen technologies, designed to offer optimal performance for these modern vehicles. The growth in the premium tire segment overall is also a good indicator of rising consumer awareness when it comes to tire safety and performance. So, this winter, expect to see more vehicles in Turkey equipped to handle whatever Mother Nature throws their way.
