California Governor Gavin Newsom is making waves again, this time urging his fellow Democrats to get a little more… well, normal. And he's not pulling any punches when it comes to his assessment of Fox News, either.
Newsom SHOCKS Dems With 'Normal' Plea! Slams Fox N...
Speaking at The New York Times' Dealbook Conference, Newsom suggested the Democratic Party needs to cool it with the judgmental vibes if it wants to broaden its appeal beyond its usual strongholds. He also touched on his own social media tactics and, of course, reiterated his less-than-glowing opinions of former President Donald Trump. You know, just another day in the political arena.
Newsom, addressing a room in New York City, argued that the Democratic Party needs to really connect with that elusive "mainstream America," especially after what he sees as a year of soul-searching following some disappointing results in 2024. The solution? According to Newsom, it's all about dialing back the intensity and trying to relate to a wider swath of the electorate. "We have to be more culturally normal," he declared, adding, "We have to be a little less judgmental." It's a sentiment I'm sure many across the political spectrum can relate to, honestly.
Now, it's interesting because Newsom has always been a champion of California's progressive policies and its diverse culture. He's always been proud to tout the state’s leadership on social issues and the economy. But this shift could be interpreted as a strategic move, especially if he's considering a run for the White House in 2028. A national campaign would demand a broader appeal, and perhaps this is him laying the groundwork.
And then there's the Fox News angle. When asked about his social media team's recent attempts to mimic Trump's posting style (a strategy that raised a few eyebrows, to say the least), Newsom explained that he gave the thumbs-up to "wake everybody up" to what he called the "normalization of deviancy." He then went on to accuse Fox News of actively contributing to this normalization, even going so far as to compare the network's prime-time coverage to the propaganda machine of the former Soviet Union, Pravda. Ouch.
"You got Pravda, the primetime lineup at Fox, just going on and on [in defense of Trump]," Newsom said. "[He] called someone the ‘R word’ or piggy, and somehow it’s just ‘Trump being Trump.’" He didn’t hold back, calling Trump a "man-child" and labeling his behavior as "unbecoming to the president of the United States.” It seems Newsom isn’t just aiming for cultural normalcy; he’s aiming to redefine what is acceptable on the national stage.
