Coupang Data Breach: Small Businesses Face Devastating Fallout!
Current Affairs 04 December 2025

Coupang's massive data breach is turning into a real headache, and not just for the e-commerce giant itself. Small businesses that depend on the platform are starting to feel the pinch, and the anxiety is palpable. Industry sources are saying the fallout could be significant.

Coupang Data Breach: Small Businesses Face Devasta...

Last week, Coupang dropped the bombshell: a data breach compromised the personal information of a staggering 33.7 million customers. We're talking names, phone numbers, email addresses, and even delivery information. Considering their active user base in the product commerce division is around 24.7 million, that's… well, that's almost everyone. You do the math. It's not a good look.

The immediate consequence? Some sellers are reporting pretty dramatic drops in sales. We're talking double-digit declines. Others are seriously considering jumping ship and finding other online marketplaces to peddle their wares. And you can't really blame them, can you?

One small business owner, posting in an online community, put it bluntly: "About 70 percent of our online sales come from Coupang, but orders have fallen by 30 percent since the data breach." Ouch. "This incident is a direct blow to sellers' livelihoods," they added. It's a stark reminder that these breaches have real-world consequences for real people.

Another seller echoed the sentiment, revealing that a whopping 90% of their revenue streams from Coupang. They're seeing traffic plummet so badly that they can't even spend their entire daily advertising budget. Imagine that – paying for ads that nobody is seeing! It's a nightmare scenario.

Of course, the impact isn't uniform across all sectors. Apparently, fashion and cosmetics sellers haven't felt the sting quite as much yet. This could be because people tend to think longer about buying those items, compared to, say, groceries. But even they aren't breathing easy. An anti-Coupang campaign or a mass exodus of customers could quickly change things, and remember, three out of every four sellers on Coupang are small businesses.

The Korea Federation of Micro Enterprise is stepping up, urging Coupang to "demonstrate accountability before the damage to small businesses snowballs." And honestly, that's a fair ask. We need to see real action to regain trust and protect the livelihoods of these entrepreneurs who are heavily reliant on the platform. The clock is ticking.
