Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has pulled no punches, accusing Vladimir Putin of "wasting the world's time" following a round of high-stakes talks between the US and Russia aimed at finding a way to end the devastating war in Ukraine. The talks, unfortunately, appear to have yielded little in the way of tangible progress, leaving Kyiv frustrated and, frankly, rightfully so.

Sybiha didn't mince words, stating bluntly, "Russia must end the bloodshed it has started. If this doesn't happen and Putin just spits into the world's face once again, there must be consequences." It's a sentiment that resonates deeply, I think, with anyone who's been following the conflict and the human cost it's exacted.

Despite the apparent lack of a breakthrough, Sybiha did offer a sliver of optimism, noting that the US delegation assured Ukrainian officials that the discussions held "positive significance for the peace process." They also extended an invitation to continue the dialogues on US soil in the near future. Let's hope that future discussions are more fruitful than this round, but frankly, I'm not holding my breath.

The US delegation, led by President Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, reportedly spent nearly five hours with Putin at the Kremlin on Tuesday. The White House, in a statement released on Wednesday, indicated that Trump had been briefed after a "thorough, productive meeting." But the devil, as always, is in the details, and those details seem to suggest a rather different picture.

Indeed, Putin's senior policy advisor Yuri Ushakov poured cold water on any hopes of an imminent resolution, stating plainly that "no compromise" on ending the war had been found. He added that while some of the US proposals were "more or less acceptable," others were openly criticised by the Russian leader. We’re essentially at a stalemate it seems.

While Ushakov remained vague on the specifics, it's no secret that at least two major points of contention continue to plague negotiations: the future of Ukrainian territory seized by Russian forces and the crucial issue of security guarantees for Ukraine. Kyiv and its European partners firmly believe that NATO membership for Ukraine represents the most effective means of deterring future Russian aggression, regardless of any potential peace agreement. This, of course, is a red line for Moscow.

Russia vehemently opposes Ukraine's potential NATO membership, and Trump has repeatedly indicated his reluctance to allow Kyiv into the alliance. According to the Kremlin, the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO was a "key question" addressed during the Moscow talks. It appears the clock is still ticking and the world waits with bated breath, hoping for even a sliver of progress.
