CM Punk, the wrestling icon and surprisingly versatile actor, is trading suplexes for sweet nothings (maybe?) as he joins the cast of Netflix's upcoming rom-com, *The Bodyguard*. Based on Katherine Center's popular novel of the same name, the film promises a mix of holiday cheer, simmering tension, and, well, a bodyguard. Color me intrigued.
CM Punk Swaps the Ring for Romance?! His Netflix R...
Deadline broke the news, and it's certainly a casting choice that raises an eyebrow – in a good way. Punk, whose real name is Phillip Jack Brooks, will be playing Doghouse, described as a physically imposing yet surprisingly funny member of the security team. Okay, that definitely plays to his strengths. We’ve seen him be the tough guy, but the humor element is where he could really shine. I always felt his best wrestling promos had a healthy dose of wry wit.
The core of the story revolves around a stoic bodyguard (Leighton Meester, perhaps channeling her *Gossip Girl* ice queen days?) protecting a charismatic action star (Jared Padalecki, looking to lighten things up after years of *Supernatural*). Throw in some holiday magic, some hidden secrets, and *bam*, you've got a Netflix rom-com recipe. And let’s be honest, we all have a soft spot for those, don't we?
The supporting cast is pretty solid too. Andie MacDowell is always a welcome addition, and the inclusion of Walker Hayes (country music star!) is another curveball that suggests this film isn’t afraid to be a little quirky. Noah LaLonde and Toby Sandeman round out the ensemble. Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, known for *Aquamarine*, is directing, and the script comes from the *Isn't It Romantic* and *Virgin River* duo of Erin Cardillo and Richard Keith. So, clearly, they know their way around a feel-good story.
It’s a busy time for Punk. He recently lent his voice to *Zootopia 2* and is currently starring in the Syfy series *Revival*. Oh, and he’s also the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Not a bad resume, right? And if that wasn’t enough, he's got an indie horror thriller, *Night Patrol*, hitting screens soon. Talk about juggling commitments!
I’m genuinely curious to see how Punk handles this rom-com role. It's a departure from his usual fare, and that's precisely what makes it exciting. Will he bring the same intensity he brings to the wrestling ring? Or will he surprise us with his comedic timing? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: *The Bodyguard* just got a whole lot more interesting.
