Colorado's Bowl Dreams Dashed: Mountaineers Delive...

MORGANTOWN, WV – Colorado's aspirations for a postseason bowl appearance were extinguished Saturday as they fell to West Virginia 29-22, marking their seventh loss of the season and eliminating them from bowl eligibility. Despite a spirited effort and a promising debut from freshman quarterback Ju Ju Lewis, the Buffaloes (3-7, 1-6 Big 12) couldn't overcome the Mountaineers (4-6, 2-6 Big 12), who secured their second consecutive victory.

The story of the game for

The story of the game for West Virginia was the unexpected emergence of Curtis Jones Jr. Normally a hybrid linebacker, Jones stepped up to fill a void in the injury-riddled running back corps. He proved to be a potent weapon, scoring two crucial touchdowns on just three carries. His second touchdown, a 4-yard run with just over four minutes remaining, extended West Virginia's lead to a seemingly insurmountable 29-19.

"He could be a weapon," West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez commented on Jones' performance, highlighting the sophomore's adaptability and willingness to contribute wherever needed.

Colorado, reeling from two consecutive blowout losses, showed signs of life with Lewis under center. Making his first career start in place of Kaidon Salter, Lewis threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Omarion Miller for a 23-yard score in the third quarter that brought the Buffaloes within three points. Miller had a season-high 131 receiving yards.

However, the Buffaloes struggled to establish

However, the Buffaloes struggled to establish a consistent ground game and ultimately couldn't overcome West Virginia's defensive pressure, which resulted in seven sacks on Lewis. While Lewis displayed poise and potential, two interceptions thrown by West Virginia quarterback Fox in the third quarter offered Colorado a window of opportunity that they failed to fully capitalize on.

A late field goal by Colorado's Alejandro Mata narrowed the gap to 29-22 with just over a minute remaining, but West Virginia recovered the ensuing onside kick, effectively sealing the victory.

The loss marks the fourth time in five seasons that Colorado will miss out on a bowl game, putting further pressure on third-year coach Deion Sanders, whose record at Colorado now stands at 16-19.

West Virginia, on the other hand, will look to build on their momentum as they travel to Arizona State next Saturday. Colorado has a bye week before hosting Arizona State on November 22nd. The Buffaloes will need to regroup and focus on finishing the season strong, even without the prospect of a bowl game.
