Grasshopper Film just snagged the North American non-theatrical and digital distribution rights for *You Need This*, a documentary that's got some serious heavyweight backing. We're talking Adam McKay-produced, so you know it's going to be thought-provoking, and probably a little bit uncomfortable, in the best way possible.
Adam McKay's New Doc: You Need This?! The Shocking...
The film comes from McKay's Yellow Dot, along with Hôtel Motion Pictures, and Scenery. It's directed by Ryan Andrej Lough, who also co-created it with McKay. From what I'm hearing, *You Need This* has been making some serious noise on the film festival circuit, and for good reason.
So what's it about? Well, it's a deep dive into the world of consumer capitalism, and how it basically runs our lives. The documentary argues that it's not just about buying stuff; it's a belief system that's subtly, yet powerfully, reshaping our values and who we are. I mean, think about it – how often do we measure ourselves (and others) by what we own, or what we *can* buy? Pretty often, right?
It gets even darker. The film also suggests that this relentless pursuit of more stuff weakens our relationships and, unsurprisingly, is a major contributor to our environmental woes. The filmmakers talk to economists, dream researchers (yes, dream researchers!), and social psychologists to unpack how this whole system steals our time for things that *really* matter: reflection, connection, and, yeah, even dreaming. I've been feeling that lack of time lately, and maybe this film can shine some light on it.
McKay himself describes the documentary as "a provocative and acerbically satirical dive into the interrelation of our dangerously flawed social, economic, and political structures." That's a mouthful, but basically, he's saying it's time we had a serious conversation about all this. He's right, of course. It's a system that benefits some and leaves many behind, while simultaneously damaging the planet. No small thing.
Lough and McKay produced the film alongside Cecilia Butler, Isidoor Roebers, and Tyler Owen. Staci Roberts-Steele, Benjamin Rednour, and Heather Mitchell served as executive producers. Clearly a big team behind this one, signaling a significant undertaking.
The deal was hammered out between Ryan Krivoshey of Grasshopper Film and Natalie Locke and Chris Perez of Donaldson Callif Perez, who represented the filmmakers. So, keep an eye out for *You Need This* hitting digital platforms and non-theatrical venues soon. Sounds like required viewing, frankly.
