Eidos-Montréal, a name synonymous with quality in gaming thanks to titles like Deus Ex and the surprisingly excellent Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, is reportedly in the midst of another round of layoffs. Yes, you read that right. It seems the studio, currently owned by Embracer Group, is facing some serious headwinds, leading to job cuts and, potentially, shelved projects. This news, surfacing yesterday from Insider Gaming, is troubling for both the talented folks at Eidos and the wider gaming community.
Eidos Montreal Hit Hard: Layoffs Rock Gaming Studi...
Specifically, Insider Gaming reports that "at least a dozen" positions have been eliminated. While neither Eidos-Montréal nor Embracer have officially commented on the situation – and let's be honest, they rarely do immediately – the impact is already being felt. A LinkedIn post from one of the affected employees confirmed the layoff, with the individual actively seeking a new design leadership role. I always find these kinds of posts heartbreaking; a testament to both resilience and the often-brutal realities of the industry.
Adding to the grim picture, another current employee reportedly lamented the loss of "incredible talent," attributing the cuts to unspecified "industry pressures." What those pressures are, exactly, remains to be seen, but it's safe to assume financial performance and shifting priorities within Embracer are playing a significant role. This isn't the first time Eidos-Montréal has been on the chopping block, either.
Back in April, the studio laid off 75 employees after the completion of a particular project. At the time, the company insisted that the cuts weren't a reflection of the staff's capabilities. It’s a line we hear all too often, isn’t it? But the truth is, talent is rarely the issue in these scenarios; it's almost always about the bottom line. And it appears the financial realities are becoming increasingly stark. Insider Gaming also reports that an internal project, launched way back in 2019, is unlikely to recoup its costs. To add insult to injury, further staff reductions are anticipated once current projects wrap up.
This latest upheaval comes after Embracer's rather significant restructuring program in January of last year, which already resulted in 97 layoffs at Eidos-Montréal. It’s all part of Embracer's grand plan to divide its business into three separate units: Asmodee, Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends, and Coffee Stain & Friends. The idea is that this will supposedly mark the end of a period of studio closures, divestments, and – crucially – layoffs. But given this latest news, it seems those promises might have been a tad premature.
The rumour mill suggests Eidos-Montréal is now focusing its efforts on supporting Xbox with *Grounded 2* and *Fable*. While those are certainly promising projects, it's a shame to see a studio with such a rich history and creative potential seemingly forced into a more supportive role. Here's hoping the talented individuals affected by these layoffs find new opportunities quickly. The industry can ill afford to lose skilled developers like these.
