Books & Literature 03 December 2025

December is often synonymous with cozy holiday movies and feel-good entertainment. But for those of us who prefer a healthy dose of suspense, intrigue, and the occasional chilling mystery, this month doesn't disappoint. In fact, it's shaping up to be a veritable feast of adaptations for mystery, thriller, and true crime fans alike.

Forget the sugar plums, we're talking about plot twists! From a deeply unsettling Japanese thriller to a highly anticipated adaptation of a BookTok sensation, there's something to keep every armchair detective guessing. And honestly, who needs another Hallmark movie when you can try to solve a murder from the comfort of your own couch?

First up, prepare yourself for "Human Specimen," a five-episode series premiering December 18th on Amazon Prime. This adaptation of a story by Kanae Minato, author of the acclaimed novels "Penance" and "Confessions," promises to be a dark and disturbing ride. The premise alone is enough to send shivers down your spine: a butterfly researcher confesses to transforming six boys, including his own son, into... well, you get the idea. While the story it's based on isn't available in English yet, the trailer looks utterly captivating.

Then there's the adaptation of Sarah Vaughan's 2020 thriller, "Little Disasters," which explores the complexities of friendship and motherhood. Vaughan's previous novel, "Anatomy of a Scandal," was already successfully adapted into a Netflix series, so expectations are high for this one. No premiere date yet, but keep an eye out.

For those who prefer true crime, "Rosemead," a film based on Frank Shyong's LA Times column about a dying mother's desperate plan, arrives in theaters December 5th. This one's guaranteed to be emotionally charged and thought-provoking.

And finally, the moment many of us have been waiting for: the third installment of the "Knives Out" franchise, "Wake Up Dead Man," hits Netflix on December 12th. Daniel Craig returns as the inimitable Benoit Blanc, this time investigating a murder in upstate New York, alongside a stellar new cast including Kerry Washington and Glenn Close. If it's anything like the first two, expect sharp writing, a clever plot, and plenty of surprises. As a huge fan of the series (the "eat-shit" scene in the first movie still cracks me up!), I'm personally counting down the days.

So, clear your schedules, grab your magnifying glasses, and prepare to be thoroughly entertained. December is shaping up to be a killer month for mystery lovers!
