HBO Max is on the hunt for the next big thing, and it seems they're looking back to the tried-and-true formats of traditional TV to find it. Riding high on the success of "The Pitt," their five-time Emmy-winning procedural, the streaming giant is actively seeking cop, medical, and legal dramas from international shores. And by international, I mean they're really expanding their search.
HBO Max's Next 'Pitt'? Could a Global Medical Cris...
Sarah Aubrey, the head honcho for original content at HBO Max, dropped some hints about their strategy while speaking to an audience in London. It sounds like these procedurals are being eyed as a key to unlocking new markets, particularly in Europe where HBO Max is planting its flag. Aubrey cleverly acknowledged the British audience's penchant for shorter series, while subtly suggesting that HBO Max is looking for shows with a bit more longevity – something that allows them to build a loyal following over many episodes.
“I think we could go back to traditional TV formats in the medical, legal and cop world," she stated, pinpointing the genres they're focusing on. "Audiences eat those up. If we apply the lessons learned from streaming over the past several years of quality character writing and apply that to those genres then we will have great success.” It's an interesting approach, blending the binge-worthy appeal of streaming with the familiar comfort of classic TV. Smart move, I think.
But it's not just about replicating old formulas; HBO Max is also celebrating the success of its locally-produced shows. Aubrey highlighted several examples, including "Furia" in Spain, "The Prince" in Turkey, and "The Eastern Gate" in Poland. Some of these shows are apparently giving HBO's flagship programs a run for their money. That just underscores the importance of catering to local tastes and narratives, something HBO Max seems to be doing quite well.
Speaking of London, Aubrey is set to attend a special HBO showcase after her appearance at Content London. Before that, she will also be visiting the Harry Potter set, and she sounds genuinely excited about it. “I think it’s such a delightful adaptation of the books,” she said. “I think when people watch it they will think, ‘These are the books’. It is created by a British writer, directed by a British filmmaker and the craftspeople are the best this country has to offer.”
The streaming service is set to launch in Germany and Italy on January 13th, which is exciting news for fans in those countries. Casey Bloys, another top executive at HBO, is expected to be at the showcase. However, the UK launch date is still shrouded in mystery. I, for one, am eager to see HBO Max expand its reach and bring its unique brand of storytelling to even more audiences – especially with a focus on these internationally flavored procedurals. It's a win-win.
