Something curious is going on behind the scenes in the Ukraine conflict. A US delegation, spearheaded by Steve Witkoff, a special envoy, and Jared Kushner, former President Trump's son-in-law, has reportedly skipped a meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Instead, they seem to have flown straight back to the States after holding talks in Moscow. That’s according to various media reports circulating, and it's raising a lot of eyebrows.
Witkoff Stuns as Zelensky Meeting Canceled: What H...
Zelensky himself had publicly stated that he was expecting "signals" from these very US representatives after their Kremlin pow-wow. This was all about a potential peace plan for Ukraine, a subject fraught with complexity, to say the least. Journalist Alex Raufoglu, writing for the Kyiv Post, initially reported that Zelensky was slated to meet with the US officials in Brussels. Then, things shifted. He later tweeted that the Brussels meeting was "called off," and Zelensky was heading home. No further explanation was given, adding to the mystery.
TASS, the Russian news agency, citing European air traffic sources, added fuel to the fire by reporting that a plane believed to be carrying Witkoff made a beeline for the US after leaving Russia. No stops in the EU. That's a pretty clear indication that the meeting with Zelensky wasn't happening. This whole situation has a definite cloak-and-dagger feel to it.
According to Axios, Witkoff was supposed to brief Zelensky on his discussions with President Putin. Zelensky even hinted that positive signals from these US representatives could pave the way for a meeting with President Trump down the line. Trump, for his part, has been consistent in saying he won’t meet with either Zelensky or Putin until a peace agreement is practically on the table. So, what changed?
The cancellation aligns rather conveniently with comments from Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, who stated that the American delegation assured Moscow they'd head straight back to Washington after their talks, not Kiev. Ushakov characterized the five-hour Russia-US negotiations as "useful, constructive and meaningful," but also conceded that "a compromise hasn’t been found" and that "there’s still a lot of work to be done." That's putting it mildly.
These negotiations reportedly revolved around a US-backed peace framework, allegedly linked to a leaked 28-point draft. The proposed plan apparently involves Ukraine ceding territory in the Donbass, abandoning its NATO ambitions, and significantly reducing its military size. Now, most analysts believe those conditions are completely unacceptable to Kiev, making the whole peace process even more difficult. Perhaps the US delegation realized the futility of the situation after their Moscow talks, deciding that a meeting with Zelensky would be a waste of time. Whatever the reason, the sudden change of plans speaks volumes about the delicate and often opaque nature of international diplomacy.
