**Minister Responds to Case of Border Officer Targeted by Indian ‘Disinformation’**

Border Officer DISINFORMATION Attack! Minister's S...

Canada's Public Safety Minister, Gary Anandasangaree, has spoken out, condemning the "defamation" of government employees, a statement that comes after reports surfaced indicating his department may have failed to assist a border officer allegedly falsely labeled a terrorist by Indian media outlets. It's a pretty serious accusation, and one that definitely needs addressing, especially in the current climate.

Minister Anandasangaree, addressing reporters on Tuesday, stated that while he was unfamiliar with the specific details of the case, he wanted to emphasize the importance of treating public servants with respect, "whether it’s from within Canada or outside." This comes on the heels of accusations that the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), which falls under his oversight, seemingly neglected to support a veteran officer who claims to be the target of an Indian propaganda campaign branding him a wanted terrorist mastermind.

The border officer in question, Sandeep Singh Sidhu, has filed a lawsuit in Ottawa, alleging that India has been using him in a disinformation scheme for the past two years, something he believes is retaliation amid ongoing diplomatic tensions. As many will remember, things got particularly frosty after Canada publicly accused Indian agents of assassinating a Sikh activist in British Columbia back in 2023. Sidhu's suit alleges that India subsequently identified him to its press as a terrorist on Canada’s payroll. Quite the accusation.

So far, the CBSA has remained silent, not responding to multiple requests for comment. Similarly, neither India’s high commission in Ottawa nor the Indian news outlets that continue to publish reports labeling Sidhu a terrorist have issued any statements to clarify their position. The lack of response is, frankly, deafening. One would expect a swift denial, or at least some form of acknowledgement, but nothing.

This whole situation unfolds as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attempts to mend fences with India, hoping to secure a much-desired trade agreement. This is happening despite mounting evidence of alleged attacks on Canada’s substantial South Asian community, adding another layer of complexity to an already delicate diplomatic dance. It makes you wonder if political expediency is trumping the well-being of Canadian citizens.

Jeffrey Kroeker, Sidhu's lawyer, paints a grim picture, describing the situation as "an orchestrated misinformation campaign against a citizen of Canada, and in this case, an innocent citizen of Canada." He went on to say, "At the height of a diplomatic row between Canada and India, they needed a convenient patsy to blame something or put something on to deflect from genuine accusations of assassinations taking place in Canada. And then the Canadian government took over the bus and drove backwards over him.” Strong words, and a damning indictment of how Sidhu feels he's been treated.

The lawsuit alleges that this disinformation campaign is part of a broader effort by India to portray Canada as a safe haven for pro-Khalistan terrorists. Pro-Khalistan activists support independence for the Sikh-majority Punjab state. The suit, filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, seeks a hefty $9 million in damages from both India and Canada, arguing that Canada failed in its fundamental duty to protect one of its own citizens.

Sidhu himself maintains that he was born and raised in British Columbia and has been a dedicated border officer for two decades. He says he's never been involved in Indian affairs. For him, the lawsuit is about reclaiming a life that was, in his words, "stolen" from him when Indian social media influencers and news outlets began falsely identifying him as a terrorist, killer, and fugitive. "Every one of these allegations is completely and unequivocally false," Sidhu stated firmly. "They are not true. This has been a misinformation campaign, a foreign interference campaign, and I have been used as a pawn.” It's a powerful statement, and one that warrants serious consideration by both governments involved.
