The landscape of the Costa Blanca isn't just beaches and bustling coastal towns. Venture inland, and you'll find a different world, a collection of small villages clinging to the mountainsides, each with its own unique charm. These areas, however, are facing a real challenge: depopulation. But there's good news on the horizon, as the Alicante Provincial Council's proposed 2026 budget is placing these often-overlooked inland areas firmly in the spotlight.

The Socialist Group has put forward amendments to the budget that would inject a significant €40 million into the Costa Blanca's interior. According to Deputy Ismael Vidal, this represents "a firm commitment to small municipalities and those at risk of depopulation." He rightly points out that the lack of essential services is a major driver of residents leaving rural areas like the Vall de Gallinera, the Vall d’Ebo, and Castell de Castells. I've visited these areas myself, and while they're incredibly beautiful, the challenges faced by residents are plain to see.

So, where's all that money going? A large chunk, over €21 million, is earmarked for improving public services and infrastructure. We're talking about investment in town halls, health centres, social areas for older residents, and even modernizing sports facilities. The '+Sport 2026 Plan,' with its €7 million budget, aims to offer the kind of amenities that encourage young people to stay. It's all about making life in these inland towns more appealing and sustainable for future generations.

But it's not just about bricks and mortar. The proposals also recognize the bureaucratic hurdles that often plague smaller councils. They plan to provide technical reinforcement, offering administrative assistants and emergency technicians to help these municipalities carry out essential works and access grants. This kind of practical support can make a real difference.

Beyond infrastructure, the package directly tackles depopulation by focusing on stimulating local economic activity. Think co-working spaces under the 'Smart Villages' concept, rainwater collection systems for irrigation, designated areas for mobile markets, and support for livestock farming. These initiatives are designed to create employment opportunities and improve the overall quality of life in these valleys and mountain communities. It's a multi-faceted approach, which is exactly what's needed.

And the Socialists aren't stopping there. Tomorrow, they're bringing a motion to the full council on behalf of residents in municipalities without bank branches. They're calling on the Generalitat Valenciana to renew contracts guaranteeing the operation of cash machines, emphasizing that this service is an essential resource that must be maintained and even expanded. This is particularly important for older residents who may rely on cash and struggle to travel to larger towns.
