Oscar season is officially heating up, and for documentary lovers, that means one thing: an avalanche of incredible films vying for a coveted spot on the Academy's shortlist. This year, the competition is fiercer than ever, with a record-breaking 201 feature documentaries in the running. Can you imagine having to whittle that down to just 15 finalists? That’s exactly what Oscar documentary branch members are tasked with doing, and the voting starts this Monday. Talk about pressure!

Oscar Secrets REVEALED! Shocking Truths Behind Thi...

To help navigate this cinematic landscape, Deadline's "Doc Talk" podcast has just dropped a new episode featuring conversations with the filmmakers behind three leading contenders. It's a fantastic glimpse into the creative process and the stories these documentaries are trying to tell. I always find these behind-the-scenes peeks fascinating – it really enriches the viewing experience.

First up is "The Tale of Silyan," a National Geographic film directed by Tamara Kotevska, who you might remember from her Oscar-nominated documentary "Honeyland." This time around, Kotevska, along with Jean Dakar (who shot and produced), takes us to her native North Macedonia, a land where white storks are practically royalty. The film centers on a farmer who takes in an injured stork, and from the sounds of it, the relationship between human and bird is truly something special. Kotevska and Dakar described it as "pure magic," which is a pretty powerful endorsement, if you ask me.

Then there's "Cover-Up," which debuted at the Venice Film Festival to critical acclaim. It hits U.S. theaters on December 19th before heading to Netflix on December 26th, so mark your calendars! I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but the buzz is definitely building. The podcast doesn’t go into specific plot details, but the title alone piques my interest.

All the interviews featured in this episode were conducted at SFFILM's Doc Stories film festival in San Francisco. That festival is becoming a key stop for filmmakers hoping to catch the Academy's eye. Smart move, I say! It makes sense to get your film in front of as many potential voters as possible. Every little bit helps in this incredibly competitive arena.

The "Doc Talk" podcast is co-hosted by Oscar winner Ridley ("12 Years a Slave," "Shirley") and Matt Carey, Deadline's senior documentary editor. It's a production of Deadline and Ridley's Nō Studios. You can listen to the new episode on Spotify, iHeart, Apple, or right there on Deadline's website. Definitely worth a listen for anyone interested in the Oscar documentary race – or just great storytelling in general.
