2025 College Football Week 15 Buzz: Ole Miss' Weis Staying; Sitake to Penn State
College Football SHOCKER! Sitake to Penn State?! W...
The college football coaching carousel is spinning faster than ever as we head into Week 15. Just when you think things are settling down, another bombshell drops. The latest? Penn State has reportedly snagged BYU's Kalani Sitake as their new head coach. Talk about a shakeup in Happy Valley!
But hold on, there's more drama unfolding down South. In a truly head-scratching turn of events, Ole Miss Offensive Coordinator Charlie Weis will, temporarily, remain with the Rebels to finish out the 2025 season. Then, he'll officially join LSU under the recently appointed Lane Kiffin. Yes, the same Lane Kiffin who bolted from Ole Miss to LSU just days ago. You can’t make this stuff up.
Ole Miss made the announcement about Weis's temporary return Tuesday, along with a statement from Kiffin himself. "With the playoff committee releasing updated rankings tonight, I wanted it to be known that after conversations with LSU, we are allowing Charlie to return to Ole Miss to coach the team during the playoffs," Kiffin stated. "I've already made the committee aware of this and I’m hopeful this decision will allow Ole Miss to receive the highest ranking possible because these great players are very deserving of that. I’m excited that Charlie will be back to help coach the greatest team in the history of Ole Miss." It's a pretty bizarre situation, but hey, it's college football.
Weis, who has been the Rebels' offensive guru since 2022, expressed his gratitude to LSU for letting him finish what he started at Ole Miss. As of Tuesday, the Rebels boast an impressive 11-1 record and a No. 7 national ranking. You can understand why they want to keep things as stable as possible for a playoff push, even if it means a slightly awkward arrangement.
The coaching frenzy doesn't stop there. Word on the street is that California is heavily interested in Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi as their next head honcho. This comes after they parted ways with their previous coach. Lupoi's defensive prowess could be just what the Golden Bears need to turn things around.
Meanwhile, Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein is reportedly a top contender for the head coaching gig at Kentucky. Apparently, things are moving quickly between the two parties. Kentucky just fired Mark Stoops after 13 seasons and consecutive losing records, so they're clearly looking for a fresh start. Stein, being a Kentucky native, could be a perfect fit.
Stein, if hired, would become the sixth SEC head coach hired in recent days. Lane Kiffin's move from Ole Miss to LSU really set off a chain reaction. Ole Miss promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to head coach. Florida landed Tulane’s Jon Sumrall, Arkansas hired Memphis' Ryan Silverfield, and Auburn brought in South Florida's Alex Golesh. Talk about musical chairs!
And finally, Nebraska's first-year defensive coordinator, John Butler, got the axe Monday. This comes after the Cornhuskers struggled with their run defense, leading to four losses in their last six games. Head coach Matt Rhule has named associate head coach Phil Snow as the interim DC for their upcoming bowl game and plans to find a permanent replacement soon.
The Huskers (7-5, 4-5) are currently 14th in the Big Ten in rushing defense, giving up a hefty 171.3 yards per game. They also only managed 19 sacks this season. Nebraska was absolutely hammered by Penn State and Iowa in their last two games, giving up a combined 444 rushing yards. Rhule clearly wants to address these issues immediately. This coaching carousel shows no signs of slowing down! Stay tuned for more updates as they develop.
