Velez-Malaga Extends Terrace Hours! Will Christmas Cheer Save the Economy?
Current Affairs 03 December 2025

Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar are about to get a little more festive – and a little later, too. Local authorities have announced that bars and restaurants in these popular Costa del Sol towns will be allowed to keep their outdoor terraces open until 2:00 AM on Fridays, Saturdays, and the nights before public holidays, kicking off December 5th and running right through to January 7th. Think of it as a little Christmas gift to the local economy.

Velez-Malaga Extends Terrace Hours! Will Christmas...

The idea, of course, is to inject even more life into the towns during the Christmas season. We're talking extended Christmas lunches that linger a little longer, those corporate dinners that bleed into late-night chats, family gatherings spilling out onto the pavement, and just general festive merriment under the (hopefully) clear Andalusian skies. It's a pretty common sight to see packed terraces down here, and this move aims to amplify that buzz.

Local business associations are practically rubbing their hands with glee. They're anticipating a real boost in trade, with the extended hours encouraging more people to dine out, shop a bit longer, and generally spend more time – and money – in the town centres. Plus, it's worth remembering that many *malagueños* who've moved away for work often return home for Christmas, so this gives them even more reason to soak up the atmosphere. It's all about keeping Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar feeling vibrant and attractive, especially as more tourists look to Spain for a bit of winter sun.

However, and this is a big *however*, not everyone is popping the cava corks. Extending bar hours inevitably means potential noise, and that's a real concern for residents. The council is very aware of this, and the extended hours come with some pretty strict conditions. The local police will be keeping a close eye on noise levels, making sure everyone adheres to the existing regulations. Any significant disturbances, and it's back to the standard closing times faster than you can say "Feliz Navidad". The bottom line is this: festive fun is encouraged, but not at the expense of a good night's sleep for the neighbours.

It’s a delicate balance, this. As someone who's lived here for over 25 years, I know how important both the tourist economy and the peace of local residents are. Let's hope this initiative brings a boost to businesses while keeping the peace – and allows us all to enjoy a truly wonderful Christmas season here on the Costa del Sol.
