But as their Saturday statement sadly conveyed: “Unfortunately, these efforts have not led to the identification of relevant new information so far.” It's a race against time, and the mountains are proving to be a formidable opponent.

The desperation felt by Smyth's family is palpable. His mother, Jo Smyth, gave a heartbreaking interview to Romanian broadcaster Antena1 TV. "We are hoping and praying he’s somehow survived this, against all odds, as the thought of life without him is unbearable,” she said, describing George as “a very bright, loving and adventurous young man.” That his phone last pinged in a remote, mountainous area only compounds the anxiety.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, Sebastian Marinescu, a seasoned local mountain rescuer, painted a bleak picture. He told the BBC that Smyth sounded "disoriented" and "physically exhausted" during their last phone call. Apparently, he was in an area being hammered by severe winds, heavy snow, and dense fog. Marinescu understandably questioned Smyth's decision to continue his hike, especially considering that darkness descends around 5 p.m. this time of year. It's a question many of us are asking, really.

The search was temporarily suspended last week, a tough but necessary call due to the escalating risk of avalanches. "We cannot fight against nature, and until the weather allows safe access, we cannot advance the search without endangering the lives of our rescuers,” Marinescu stated, offering a somber assurance that they would resume the search as soon as it was safe to do so. The waiting must be agonizing.

A spokesperson for the University of Bristol acknowledged the situation, confirming that they were aware one of their students was missing after independently traveling to Romania for a hiking trip.
