Angelina Jolie is diving headfirst into the world of gritty crime dramas, and frankly, I'm here for it. The Oscar winner is set to star in and produce *Sunny*, a new thriller that sounds like it's going to pack a serious punch.
Angelina Jolie's Darkest Role Yet?! What's Behind ...
Directed by Eva Sørhaug, known for her work on edgy shows like *Tokyo Vice* and *Yellowjackets*, *Sunny* centers around a female gangster. And not just any gangster, but one fiercely protective of her sons. We're talking "stop at nothing" levels of protection, which already hints at a pretty intense narrative.
The script, penned by William Day Frank and developed with Sørhaug, draws inspiration from classic mafia stories. So, expect double-crosses, tense family dynamics, and a whole lot of moral ambiguity. It's that classic formula for edge-of-your-seat storytelling, but with a fresh, female-led perspective. That's a welcome twist.
Gramercy Park Media, A Higher Standard, and Nickel City Pictures are all backing the project, with Nathan Klingher, Jolie herself, Mark Fasano, and Jeffrey Greenstein producing. Fasano seems particularly excited, describing Jolie as a "tour-de-force" and promising a portrayal that will leave audiences stunned. High praise indeed, but given Jolie's track record, I'm inclined to believe him. He also added that the world Sørhaug and Jolie are creating is “rooted in survival and family, led by a mother who will stop at nothing to protect her two boys.” That's the kind of stakes that make for compelling cinema.
This isn't the only thing on Jolie's plate, of course. She recently earned nominations for her portrayal of Maria Callas in *Maria*, and she has several other projects in the works, including *Couture*, *Anxious People*, and *The Initiative*, which reunites her with Doug Liman of *Mr. & Mrs. Smith* fame. So, safe to say she's keeping busy! But *Sunny* sounds like a particularly intriguing departure, a chance for her to sink her teeth into a truly complex and compelling character.
Sørhaug's involvement is also exciting. Her previous work demonstrates a knack for creating suspenseful and psychologically driven narratives. Her psychological thriller *90 Minutes* premiered at TIFF back in 2017. Combining her directing talents with Jolie's acting prowess? *Sunny* has the potential to be something truly special. I know I'll be keeping an eye on this one.
