Helldivers 2, the surprise co-op shooter hit that's been keeping gamers glued to their screens, just got a whole lot lighter. Arrowhead Game Studios, the brains behind the bug-squashing mayhem, has partnered with Sony studio Nixxes to roll out a "slim" version for PC that dramatically slashes the game's file size from a whopping 154GB down to a much more manageable 23GB. That's a huge difference, freeing up precious space on those SSDs!
Helldivers 2 SHOCK! Massive File Size Cut - How Di...
Now, before you start thinking this is some kind of compromise that'll make loading times glacial, hold your horses. Arrowhead anticipated those concerns early on. The studio had initially warned that reducing file size – which involved eliminating data duplication – could potentially lead to a tenfold increase in loading times. That's the kind of thing that can seriously hamper the gaming experience, turning frantic bug hunts into frustrating waits.
But it turns out, the studio's initial fears were thankfully overblown. "These loading time projections were based on industry data," Arrowhead clarified, comparing SSD versus HDD loading speeds with and without data duplication. They even added a buffer, conservatively doubling the projections "to account for unforeseen issues." Better safe than sorry, right?
However, real-world data paints a much brighter picture. "Now things are different," Arrowhead explained. "We have real measurements specific to our game instead of industry data." Apparently, only about 11% of Helldivers 2 players were still rocking mechanical HDDs in the past week. And here's the kicker: unlike most games, Helldivers 2's loading time is primarily determined by level generation, not asset loading. Asset loading actually happens in parallel, minimizing the impact even for those HDD holdouts. I've gotta admit, that's some clever optimization!
The results of a beta test were clearly positive, because Arrowhead is planning to make the slim version the default option for all players. Assuming everything goes smoothly, the legacy version will be phased out sometime next year. This is a big win for players with limited storage space and, frankly, anyone who doesn't want a single game hogging up a massive chunk of their drive. I know I appreciate it.
This slimmer Helldivers 2 is set to launch alongside the major 5.0.0 patch and the much-anticipated jungle-themed Python Commandos Warbond. This Warbond is packing some heat, including several fan-requested weapons like a minigun. So, get ready to dive back in, liberate some planets, and enjoy a leaner, meaner Helldivers 2!
